I have been depressed for a long time now. I crave sweets almost every day. I used to be able to make a candy bar last a couple of days. I would love to hear if someone is dealing with the same issue and if you have any ideas on how to stop the cravings.

Well, if you are eating chocolate bars in particular, they contain theobromine, a chemical found in cocoa and chocolate. It is a mild stimulant and some research has been known to cause a mild addictive quality. No need to worry it is very mild and not worth seeing an addiction specialist about lol. But that explains why chocolate can both promote a feeling of "well" being and a supposed aphrodisiac (it's a mild stimulant). Just a little trivia.

On a personal note, I find that sugars digest easier for me when my stomach is nervous from anxiety so I eat more then maybe I should at times. But I to curb my cravings by eating fruit.

Hi, Goodgirl62! I am uncertain, but sugar cravings may be a side effect (among some people) of some antidepressants.

I experience the opposite. For the past several years I have had a distaste for most sweet foods. Doctors tell me it may be a side effect of one of my meds.

Yes, sweets serve as a mild anti-depressant. So does caffeine. As long as your cravings are not taking over your life, then you might as well indulge yourself a little bit.

I have the same issue too, although I don't know how much of it is from depression. What I do if they get really bad (this is gross but it works for me) is I drink a teaspoon of cider vinegar. If you have a weak stomach, I wouldn't recommend it, though.

I crave sweets like crazy!!! I broke my soda habit last Feb. and stayed off soda for 7 months, only to start drinking them again with a vengence!
I wish I could quit eating so much sugar.

I gained so much weight with the sweet cravings. Kroger would have Bryers Ice Cream on sale every week. So, I thought I had to try them all. Thank God I am over the ice cream. Now it's cookies, candy, donuts and when there is nothing else cinnamon toast. So, where in the heck is the antidepressant that will help with sweet cravings??? I want it NOW!!! Please!!!

I crave a lot of sweets as well. However, I realized that by eating chocolate your mood may temporarily escalate, But after that you crash. Making you feel worse then you did before you ate the chocolates and sweets. One of the easiest ways to deal with it is to find balance. eat chocolate or sweets then fruit and or orange juice (but I don't like orange juice). You can dip your fruit into chocolate or sweets as well. If you want to try it, private message me if you would like my recomendations and let me know if it works for you.
