i have battled with self harm for just over a year and recently got to the bottom as i have been thinking of getting completely out of this life. i looked researched about this and found that it may be due to depression. i since have looked up the other symptoms of depression and have realised that i have quite a few of them. the only problem is that i havent told anyone about it as i dont know how to go about saying that i think i am depressed. this is also the main reason in why i havent seek professional (medical) help

Depression is a serious MEDICAL condition. I admire you for researching it and realizing "hey...I might be suffering from this." The cause could be situational or even something biological such as something is blocking seretonin to your brain. Its not something all in your head and there are a million things that can make someone depressed. We're here for you at PC every step of the way! I hope you find plenty of support here lonleyandscared

I just admitted to myself that I am suffering from depression and I am telling my primary care physician about the sadness, lack of motivation, fatigue and hopelessness tomorrow.
Thanks for this!

Hello there,

I urge you to write down your symptoms, see your GP, and obtain a referral to a psychiatrist. Many disorders have self-harm as a symptom, including depression, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, and more. Please seek professional help as soon as you are able to...your mental well-being is just as important as any physical issue! And finding out what you're struggling with is often the first step towards recovery.

Sterling advice! Good for you for researching what you have been experiencing. I hope your circumstances permit the easy enlistment of professional support. Depression and its minions can be such monsters that fighting them alone is daunting.

The first step is admitting you might have something deeper then just a little sadness. Second is admitting you need help. Make an appointment with your primary care doc, once you get the words out "I'm depressed", any good doc will take it from there. He/She may rx an antidepressant. A lot of people find that first one does it for them. Some people have to try more then one to find relief. Good luck!

I agree with the other posters here. They've given you such good advice. ^_^
