Hello,
I am new to PsychCentral. I searched out this site to try to find support and understanding from others who face similar depression issues. One major one that I've dealt with my whole life is motivation. I get overwhelmed and dismayed so quickly about trying to get started on things. I know that taking little baby steps add up.... etc etc But its still ever present for me it seems. I guess for me to just talk about it - takes a little bit of its power away! Hikin |

I find that the only way I can stay motivated is to have a definite goal, usually a date when something is happening. For instance at the moment I am studying for a musical grade exam that will happen sometime in the next 4-8 weeks (I'm waiting for the exact date).
Just knowing I have something to work towards somehow motivates me, I then find I have more energy and then everything else slots into place somehow. To make things easier for myself I have a) chosen an easier exam than I think I am capable of just because I know I can't handle too much stress right now and I'd rather pass an easy exam than fail a hard one! b) I've allowed myself plenty of time to get ready for the exam, so there's no panic. I try to practise a little every day and I have a set time for this practise. For me I am amazed at just how focused and motivated I become when I have such a small thing to look forward to. I just have to make sure that I have another date lined up afterwards because I know from experience that once a date has passed I tend to slip back into depression. Things to look forward to and things to work towards seem to keep me motivated. Hope you find what works for you! x |

thank you very much for saying hello and with your idea
a major thing i struggle with though is deciding on a goal that seems worthwhile i get overwhelmed with that decision. it makes me anxious and depressed to try to decide what will be a worthwhile goal versus a waste of time and futile. |

well, justme, but if we don't try then how will we know if we will fail or not? you might want to ask yourself "what's the worse thing that can happen to me if i try?" a successful outcome could help you to want to try again the next time.
