Hi
I am sleeping for 20 -22 hours per day and am always tired. How do I wake up? When I have to go to work I do but when I dont I am always tired and sleep. I wake up feeling so sore and achy my bones are screaming at me, yet I dont feel as if I have rested at all.

First thing you should do is see your doctor and make sure nothing is wrong. You could have a virus or something.

Depression can make one tired/sleepy and make you want to sleep all the time. Also, by staying in bed too long, your bones & muscles WILL get sore and achy. It's from underuse. You need to force yourself to get up before your muscles atrophy.

But make sure you get a checkup. Best of luck and let us know how you come out, will you? Thanks. Hugs, Lee
Thanks for this!

Yes Please to make sure you go to a doctor. It could be anything - a virus, thyroid, hormonal imbalance, a mood disorder, diet... really anything! So be sure to get it checked out.

Hi jazper,

You might want to be tested for mono. I have had it twice, you feel terrible - exhausted and achy. I didn't get the sore throat until a month into the illness. But exhaustion is also a symptom of depression. It may help to take the "depression" quiz here on psych central... and of course also see a doc. Hope you feel better.

on top of what everyone else said...
It will take a while to *reset* your sleeping to just the nightime, as opposed to when you are tired. Those days when you do go to work, keep that solid routine. Then transfer aspects of it to the other days you dont go out. Like: "every day, i eat breakfast...and do 5 other simple things"...So maybe you keep busy with those simple things as part of a daily consistent routine. So maybe after those things, reward yourself with a treat like sleep. My T is trying to encourage me to do something similar - as ACTIVITY PLANNING - so im not just so blah and sore from sleeping a lot. T stresses that i be patient with change and not beat myself up EVEN MORE with how im physically feeling on top of everything else. Overall, know that you are NOT BAD for being so tired. Besides health issues in different ways, some people do just need more sleep than others. Ive learned with me that i need 10hr of sleep = less and im still too groggy (esp with meds) and i get sick really easily from lack of sleep. Beyond a certain point is dysfunctional if you are not doing anything at all. But it does seem like you are trying - by expressing frustration with this issue -and gradually working on doing more...Know that you are also not alone with this struggle
