I'm new to this whole internet group thing and I wanted to give it a try. Recently I have had a really rough year. I had to take a semester off of school and move home and transfer to another school because of an injury and bad grades. Personally I hate school and never really wanted to go but I felt like that was the thing you had to do. Now that I'm at the new school I completely hate my major, I am a dance major and I completely hate the program there but I feel like I am constiantly getting critized and I'm tired of it. Not to mention I'm also working part time just so I have enough gas money to actually get to school. I'm just so overwhelmed and frustrated with life right now. I'm a christian girl and I always look to god and I know he always has a plan for me but it's hard when you feel like your driving through life with your eyes closed. All I know is before I moved back home last semester I wasn't in a good state mentally and depression began to control who I was. The last thing I need is to go back to where I was at exactly a year ago and start from square one. I'm tired of feeling this way. I still love to dance but school is just too much for me and now I feel trapped and I'm not sure if I should just call it quits and put it on pause or just continue taking it one day at a time and hope for the best? I don't know maybe it's something more than school and deep down it's bothering me but I don't know what it is. Well I'm done rambling for now.

Hello & Welcome, DancinGirl24! I hope you can gain valuable insights and uplifting support here.

I would love to see you keep dancing. I would hate to see you lose your love of dancing by forcing your passion into a mold incompatible with your personality. In short, I have no idea how to counsel you in this matter.

You can do your own research, but one decent, unbiased place to start is here:
US Department of Labor
Bureau of Labor Statistics
Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2010-11 Edition
Dancers and Choreographers
Recreational Therapists
All the best to you!

Could you possibly take a little time off from school while you work on getting your depression under control? I know that even the smallest task can overwhelm you when you're depressed. Criticism can be a motivating force, driving you to work harder and prove that you've got what it takes, but not when you're suffering from depression. I can't begin to imagine what it would be like to pursue an education in a hostile environment while depressed. I think the only way to get through it would be with a high degree of emotional resiliency.

Best wishes to you, whatever you decide to do next.

I think if it's too stressful & overwhelming you should definitely take some time off. You need time to figure out what you want & need. Also, it would help to talk to a school therapist or somebody you trust to help you stay grounded. Sorry things are rough for you, you just need time to evaluate & make a game plan.

I agree with SoFragile and jitters about trying to take a little time off to get things in control.

Is it possible to get any counseling at your school or just see any local therapists that could help you?

Most times taking a good antidepressant and seeing a good therapist until you feel better is the best solution to get better as soon as possible. That way you can regain focus on the things you love most and school work.
