Well I know a lot of people who SI find the term "emo" offensive. It doesn't mean cutting or depression or anything, but that's what a lot of people use it as. What do you think about it? I know a girl who dresses "emo" and is kind of obsessed with the Black Veil Brides, and she gets really annoyed when people refer to her (or her precious Black Veil Brides or anyone else) as "emo". Personally I don't think it's offensive, because most of the time it's just a misunderstanding. Some peoole don't know what it means, and don't know much of anything about cutters or depression, so they dont realize that what they are saying is something else entirely (unless they are using it as an insult, which often happens and really ticks me off, especially when they mean it as depression or SI) but if they are joking about it or talking about people who have depression or SI, even my friends do that. Even I do! (if I got mad at them for it they would be concerned.) But it's not because they are mocking us, they just don't understand. What are your thoughts? I just wanted to hear what other people with depression thought about it.

Hello, Mylifeisdepressing! I'm not around people enough to hear them referring to me as "emo" or "crazy" or "lazy" or whatever. I get triggered fairly easily, so I suppose I would be hurt by that language directed at me in an insulting tone.
By the way, "emo" is a term that post-dates my generation, so I had to go look it up in the UrbanDictionary.

no offense, I didn't realize that Emo was used much anymore. I thought that was more popular in the aughts. I guess once a sub-set, always a sub-set?

I hear people say it all the time. Mostly teenagers though, I guess.

I have never once associated Emo and Depressed as one in the same.
Depression is a disorder where Emo, for all intents and purposes is a label for a social group. When I think of Emo, I never think of Depression, I think of kids dressing a certain way and listening to certain music. In my opinion, I don't think one has to do with the other. |

I don't think so either, at all. That's why it's annoying when people use the word that way.
