I found my friend crying and sad. He wouldn't tell me why but said he knew why. So we talked, I asked if he had eaten anything. He said no, so I offered to get him lunch and he accepted. But he also asked for me to pick up some beer for him and I said no. He said if you don't I will anyway. I suggested he do something physical instead, like go for a walk or bike ride or join the gym with me. I had to return to work and when I returned to him at the end of the day, he evidently went and bought some beer.

Good for you for sticking by your values. You also suggested a positive outlet. Can't control what another grown person chooses to do. Sorry you were put in that situation. Sounds like you're really worried about him.
