I feel uncomfortable around other people and especially in get-togethers. I would blend into the wall if I had my choice. I especially get embarrassed if someone gives me recognition. Tonight I got a special certificate--I knew I should be happy but I felt the opposite and was soon overwhelmed with fear. I came home and had an awful stomach ache and threw-up and cried.

Has anyone else ever had this problem?

Yes. I abhor any kind of attention. I skipped my high school graduation because I knew I was getting an award. Severe social anxiety.

For me, fear from recognition or attention usually has to do with low self-esteem ... I don't deserve this, what if they find out who I really am, even I don't believe I am good enough, etc. That is under my social fears and what I have to work on.

Social anxiety is not easy to live with. I have lived with it for 64 years, and was able to have a career; surprises me today to look back on those years. But, over the past 4 years I have worked very hard with my psychologist to gain ground and have been successful in many but not all ways. I isolate much less than before, a good thing.

I still hate living through a day and hate seeing the sun come up because it means I must see my way through another day, if it would just stay night all the time

If you don't already see a therapist, my suggestion is to find one and get to work. You will be a much happier person. Don't wait until you her gray hair, quit working and discover you have nothing but four walks and a TV.

Thanks everybody--it helps to know others have this same kind of problem and that therapy can help with this. I am over 40 years old and have never addressed this problem but know it definitely adds to my depression problems.

I also dread social events. I have no chatter and am amazed when I see others just talking, talking. What are they talking about? I can never find anything to say. So I find a child or some other person who looks as lost as I am and just hang with them until I can go home.
I'm glad you are getting help. We all need it.
Thanks for this!
