All I want to do is lie in bed and sleep or lie on the couch and watch TV which is unfortunate as I have a lot of uni work to do. I wish I could just power through it and get this stuff done like a normal person. Why does everything have to be so hard?

Everything is hard when we're depressed. Can you try to tell yourself you have the strength to get through this and in time, with work on your part, things may become easier and easier for you? I know its hard right now and these words wont fix you, I just hope they'll give you a little hope.

Hi Retro, I know what you are saying. Personally I think depression sucks the life out of a person, mind and body. It's a fight that we have every day. I'm so sorry you are feeling like this, But when you are depressed it 's a battle we fight every day. Best Wishes to you.

I know the desire to lie in bed all day or to just watch TV---even reading takes too much energy.

But--- you are in university, right? Please don't let this opportunity go to waste. You may never get the chance to do it again. Life might just happen and sweep you away with the need just to survive. I wasted my opportunities in college so I know what I'm talking about. Try to do just one thing. Don't think about all the things you need to do. Think only of the one thing you choose to do right now.
Are you seeing a professional? If not then you must seek one right now! It's almost always necessary to get help to get through depression. It's not something that will just go away. There are things that can help you cope so life will be easier to handle. I'm sure your school has a counseling center. Go see them. If they don't have one then look up your city's helpline numbers and call them.
Please don't let this trouble ruin your college career. It's so important.
I hope you feel better soon and Good luck. Keep posting here. We'll be interested to know how you are

Thanks everyone for the replies.

@ bharani1008 - I am seeing a therapist / Pdoc and am on antidepressants so yeah... that all seems to be working really well (not). Anyway, I'm not planning on quitting college or anything because I know if I do that I will be even more unhappy. I just have to stick it out I guess!

When I get depressed I feel the Same way about everything. What I do is try to make a list (mostly just in my head) of the things I need to get done and by when. Then I set times I want to work on them. That way I have a little more success getting things accomplished, instead of doing nothing and sinking deeper in depression. I find things are easier if you break then down and just focus on one thing at a time.

Don't know if you being treated with an anti-depressant or if you even need one. Does the school have a counselor or are you in therapy? I very much empathize. I take antidepressants, but when I get down there's no getting up sometimes. But sounds like you need to see someone; get up and make yourself go. Don't let life pass you by. Not at all diminishing how you are feeling. I can very much relate. The world can be beautiful. I want you to see that! I care.
