Someone just told me something relating to depression that I wanted to share. They said that instead of doing positive self talk to chase away negative thoughts and feelings, be supportive of yourself instead. Acknowledge that the negative feelings are there and choose not to listen to them. Don't try to pump yourself up, because that never works! Just accept that the negative thoughts or feelings are there and say to yourself that it is your depression talking, and that you are worth more.

Thank you for sharing that. I do a lot of journalling, and that is where I accept my depression and give it a voice.
Thanks for this!

I really like this. This is one of my BIGGEST problems, and it puts so much pressure on me! I would like to acknowledge the feelings and accept them, not try to push them away. Thank you for writing this!

Thank you for posting, Beloiseau. I believe this is an excellent approach for many, and if not for many at least some. Positive self talk does nothing for me; I cannot shake the feeling I'm deluding myself. Acknowledging the negative "feels" more authentic to me.

Very interesting perspective. I cannot grasp the positive talk when in a depressive episode, either. It just doesn't work. I never believe it. I find myself wondering who I'm kidding. Being supportive of myself, though, that I can get behind.

I just sat outside smoking a cigarette in 30 degree weather trying positive talk because I freaked out on my family. I'm trying your approach next time. I think I could get behind that.
