When my mom told me that a friend of hers who runs mental health here told her that depression was a very debilitating disease. And I knew my Mom knew and understood that.

When my husband just sits nad holds my hand. Physical touch is much more comforting than words. Coming from the right person of course.

The most helpful thing a person has said to me....
I don't know what to say, but I'm here to listen if you want to talk. If you don't feel like talking, would it be okay to just sit with you? That really helped me... Sometimes when people try to "fix it" ...they tend to lose the point. "...words can't help at all. It's just the sound of another human voice that makes the only difference. There's nothing you're going to say that's going to make any body happy when they're feeling ******..." (Revenge of the Lawn, Richard Brautigan |

Something like "I'm here to listen whenever you need it" is probably good.
I'm like Curupira, usually when I'm sad I seek physical comfort so I tend to try and get a lot of hugs from my family and friends. It's not really a phrase but just spending time with me is probably the most helpful. Even if they're chattering away or we're sitting and watching a movie, keeping me busy is important and I take it as comfort because they want to hang out with me. |

Nothing, just being there

Either "what can I do to help" or "I'll be here with a hug and quiet company whenever you need me".

I think that one might lead to suicide for people who are on the edge, although it's perfect for those who are not.

When someone helps me with little things that I'm struggling with, e.g. cooking, leaving my room to take a walk, etc. without saying very much or trying to offer advice.

"It's ok to feel that way." This helps when it comes from my H. Our relationship has even rocky to say the least...but when he says this sincerely, for some reason I feel lighter.
Also, when he holds my hand or touches me gently, it helps too. |
