Am I the only who feels a little resentment over "America's Sweetheart", Julia Roberts? Ever since her half sister, Nancy Motes committed suicide last month, and claimed she felt abandoned by the famous star, I have not felt quite the same about her.
Even so much so, that I'd hoped she would not win the best supporting actress Oscar last night. I know Nancy was not without problems, but I'm wondering if she had felt more support from her family, would she have weathered the storm better. Heck, would she even have had a mental illness? It seems to me, from what I've read, that JR was less than kind to her suffering sibling. I mean, come on...berating her for her weight? We wonder if movie stars are sometimes full of themselves and let their fame and fortune go to their heads. I guess, now we know. They do. ![]()

I can understand the anger and frustration, but the media can warp things in which ever direction serves them (or rather, their profit margins).
I have an aunt and uncle in the radio industry (Morning DJs). They aren't ubber famous, but they are leading personalities in the area. A lot of what is said about their lives from other media outlets is just sensationilized. It is difficult not to hold resentment, but they really do have to shield their kids, my cousins, as best they can. No one can really see what goes on inside their life and home, but them. I just thought I would mention that the media doesn't always portray REALITY, especially on a personal, family level. |

"Regular" people sometimes have a difficult time with MI issues in their friends or relatives. Why should she be held to a higher standard? Suicide is rarely solely because of something someone else did. It's a selfish act. I don't know how close they were but as half siblings it seems hard to believe JR would intentionally control her so totally. So I think the likelihood there were shame, depression and self esteem issues is very high. And yes, there should be more support in most families but I see that as a disjunction in our society. People are involved in their own stuff, insecurities, shame. Someone that concerned about weight as JR is portrayed to be is in shame. Not surprising at all. Most women are let alone celebrities. Sadly it often takes something like this to wake up family members. Believe me she is probably experiencing grief and guilt over this. I honestly have not watched this story unfold but I think the press should concentrate on the fact that it can happen in many families. That won't sell ads however.
On the subject of winning an oscar I am really disappointed in cate blanchard's speech. I don't mind that she won... She shouldn't be penalized for woody Allen but I don't think she should have made so many accolades about him. I didn't see it but I read that the audience was less than warm. Maybe the tide is turning where woody Allen is concerned. Allen is surely an example of ego and power at work. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

There are some people who actually abuse their fame and fortune (coughJustinBiebercough) but on a whole I really like to give famous people the benefit of the doubt. We don't know the whole situation and like paynful said the media will twist a story whatever way they think will sell more. Even famous people are still human and make mistakes and callous remarks. And to be honest, I have seen plenty of normal people abuse their own popularity among friends and classmates and rich people make ill use of their money so really I think it's more just dependent on the individual.

I suppose that could be the case, paynful but if the interviews I've read from the fiancée are accurate, and I don't know why they wouldn't be, then more than likely there is some validity. With that said, a media outlet could be get in hot water for libel. They can't force this guy to portray Roberts in this light, or say the things he said. Also, she left a lengthy suicide note detailing the mistreatment. And, finally she left a trail of discontent on Twitter.
I just hope Julia was not the kind of person to "fat-shame" her sister and practically cut her out of her charmed life. Because, that would be a travesty. I don't completely blame her but I do think she is not completely innocent of these accusations. Where there's smoke, there's usually fire.

<Jaw drops and goes off to cry a little> How awful! I don't wonder about movie stars and their inflated egos at all....As far as I see, the majority are the definition of pompous... ETA: didn't she "play" that character in that movie??? Ummmm....Catherine Zeta Jones was in it? Anybody? Jeez, it almost seems now that she was making fun of her sister when she made that movie.... |

Libel cases with celebrities are uncommon even when they are justified. The story stays in the public eye for a long time. The public has a short memory. It isn't worth it.
When healthy people are mistreated like is alleged they discontinue the relationship. That isn't a justification of JR or a condemnation of motes. I don't know what doctors would say about the suicide note but regarding twitter JR is a natural target for public humiliation whether she deserves it or not. It's really easy to dis somebody on twitter when you are thinking emotionally. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Thanks for your comments keeprolling and paynful. I grew up watching Roberts' movies. I've always liked her. I still do, I'm just disappointed in how this played out. I realize celebs are just like us. They make mistakes and say mean stuff. But, they have much to lose should they 'mess up'. Yes, I agree Michanne, Woody Allen is probably guilty as charged. Roberts is an angel compared to him. But, whenever something unpalatable gets out about a celebrity, you can better believe it may put a smudge on their otherwise perfect public image. I realize her sister had mental health issues and took her own life at her weakest moment. That is very unfortunate. I just wish Julia had been a little 'nicer' to her sister.

you don't know anything going on in a celebs life. the info that's out there, you don't know what is true whats semi true or whats twisted into the truth nor whats not true at all. Though i do/can understand the disappointment you had when the image portrayed to you was demented.
