How does someone who has been depressed for 15-20 years get over depression? I have no money, I live in a new city, I'm terrified of everything, and suffer from mild anxiety... from anything social. I come from a family that was severely against therapy. I cannot live this depressed, pathetic existence anymore. What steps can and should I take?

I feel alone and helpless. How do I start to live a life that isn't so negative?

P.S. I don't think a website that has a forum on depression should have an option to "Disable smilies in text".

Welcome to PsychCentral

There will be services available in your state to help you. Try contacting a local community help center or liaison. Local churches may also know of the right people to contact.

Therapy may be a good idea, even if your family is against this.

Wish I could be more help. Maybe someone from Chicago may have more insight.

Again, welcome!

You can try the 411 number and ask them what is available in your area. If phones are difficult for you 411 is also online in larger cities and towns.

You can post here in the forums section and get peer support too.

I am sure Chicago has services that are free. i would suggest you try meds and therapy regardless of what your family thinks. Reach out for help from proffesionals.
