hey everyone,

I thought I posted a thread, more detailed, but I accidentally did not post it :/
So this one will be shorter

I went through a very bad depression episode in high school during all my years except freshman, but got myself out of it. I don't know how I did it. Three years later, I'm in college. I get my first serious girlfriend spring of last year. It was amazing. We were "in love." Then she broke up with me when fall rolled around over something that she had reassured me many times wasn't going to be an issue for our relationship. I was fine initially. I Aced my college courses for the fall semester, and they were difficult classes. When fall semester was becoming closed, I have a very intense panic attack (second panic attack I ever had). The sense of panic stayed for nearly a week. What followed was anxiety, and now depression. I had to withdraw from the current semester because I was failing my classes. I know that the break up and the lack of time emotionally dealing with it. I just can't seem to get out of this depression. One of the main thing I think that's keeping me down is that I'm having a hard time moving on. I feel like having a one-night stand could fix it, but I'm sure it won't. Any advice
Hugs from:

Thanks for this!

Sounds like the break up may have triggered a depression if you have a history of it. You may need some outside help in getting through this grieving process. Like meds and therapy. Are there any services at your school?

Well, to be truthful, I am depressed almost constantly. Sometimes it is worse, sometimes not as worse. I do not know if this has a name.

I, too, spend most of my time being depressed with only two manic episodes. This time I've been in depression for almost 2 years and nothing seems to be bringing me out of it.

Dysthymia?

Dysthymia - National Library of Medicine - PubMed Health

Of course you'd need to go over it with your doctor for a proper diagnosis.

I was researching some stats recently to try to make a case for getting a pdoc appointment (but that's a long story for a different place). The figures are hard reading, but to me there is no point in sugar coating the truth about the very unpleasant illness that is depression.

I'll try and remember the stats off the top of my head (these figures relate to UK).

80% of people who have had a major depressive episode will develop at least one further episode in their lifetime and the median number of episodes experienced is four. The average (median) duration of an episode is 16-24 weeks. 12% of people will go on to develop an enduring depression that is unremittingand they will have varying degrees of symptoms for 59% of the time, with 15% of the time being in a mjor depressive episode.

My vital stats are:
number of episodes of major depression 6
length of current episode 30 months
time in current episode where severely depressed 12/30 months (40%)

attentionThis is an old thread. You probably should not post your reply to it, as the original poster is unlikely to see it.
