Hi all today my sons school received a letter in referral to some counselling ( he has anxiety due to my physical disabilities) he is going to have now in this letter all of my mental health problems were noted, were talking depression,GAD and personality disorders. The teacher told me she had received it and I told her that I had asked the counsellor not to disclose my mental health issues, she toldme that she understood why as it was very personal.
I understand full details are needed to allow my son to gain the correct support but I specified not these details now I'm do embarrassed.
The reason why is because I'm also a teacher (no longer working) and during visits to school myself and the staff would discuss teaching issues etc and I felt a mutual respect both personally and professionally, a couple of my childhood friends teach there too. Now I feel as if they going to look at me differently like some lunatic and I never want to attend parent evenings again, I'm mortified!
I don't care what anybody says mental health still has that awful stigma attached
I'm devestated
J

I don't know what to say other than im sorry they disclosed what you had requested them not to.
Its not fair.
Unfortunately its done now. I hope it is being kept confidential from now on.
All you can do is be the person you always have and hope that you are judged on your merits rather than the diagnosis.
Im glad your son will be receiving the help he needs.
I don't mean to down play your upset by the way. I understand how hard it must be.

My youngest daughter has a little bit of anxiety. I fear that she got it from me. I have pretty deep depression and a lot of anxiety (and bpd and self harm)......

Yes - it is bothersome.

My daughter also has one friend (sarah) who has some depression issues (her mother is an alcoholic and her home-life stinks). My daughter has another friend (jessica) who is a self-harmer (her father is detached and can be verbally abusive).

Each of those friends have (on occasion) asked to sleep at our house - so they did not have to deal with there home lives.

My point is - there are a lot of us with "issues". I hope you can see that.

BTW- I have told each of these gals that they can stay at our home ANYTIME they need. I may have my issues - but I want these young people to have some safe refuge. I hope YOU have a safe refuge too.

Gods blessings to you.

J, I'm sorry this happened but hold your head high and continue to be the great dad you are. Hopefully the teacher will honor the privacy issue and not gossip. Thank goodness your son is going to get help early in his life.

Hi, I'm sorry to hear that such personal details were disclosed. No one should never know about a mental illness unless the sufferer chooses to disclose such details. Personally, if you could have afforded it, I would recommend a psychiatrist or therapist not associated with a school, there are many legal restrictions on the disclosure of medical records. Anyways, atleast the earlier help is found, the better the results of treatment usually are. Wishing you well.

Thanks guys for helping me its ice to hear your comments and thoughts, all of which are positive I'm most greatful for that.
We all sound so similar at times and I know that I worry massively about my sons mental health being similar to mine, this is why I got the counselling for my boy, I wasn't going to not address his anxiety and emotions like my parents did at that age.

Thanks again and take care

My daughter turned out to have MH issues, and I waited too long to get her help because I was in denial and afraid to put her on meds. I first noticed issues in adolescence and SHOULD have done something then. By 16 it was obvious and I took her to a psychologist, who recommended a psychiatrist.

You are an excellent parent for facing the issue head-on and putting yourself out there so the professionals have all the info they need.

Sounds like people already have a high opinion of you. I think teachers are by nature a caring bunch. Just act like nobody knows.
