Hi I am new here .I suffer from depression. I also broke up with my gf of seven years. I am 62 and alone. I feel that I will be alone for the rest of my life. When I first broke up with her I lost interest in a lot of pleasurable activities and I also stopped eating and have been smoking way too much. I just feel so lost and alone without my girlfriend and best friend. The pain is just about unbearable and there seems to be no let up.

I go to a mental health facility and see a therapist. I am also on meds I don't know, I'm just having a very bad day right now.

Hi JohnAll63. Welcome to the forums. I know what it's like to be depressed after a break up. My ex filed for divorce after 9 years. I was devastated. I grieved for at least 2 years.
It was really bad for me. One thing I will never tell you is to man up. I hate when people say that. Men have feelings too. I hope you start feeling better soon.

Hello John: I'm sorry to hear of your break-up. I'm 65 and although I have not had this happen to me, I can imagine what it must be like at our age. There are many fine people on PsychCentral. I'm sure you'll find much comfort here. Keep in mind that the more you post, & reply to others' posts, the more you'll get out of the time you spend here.

There is a social group for us older folks you might look into and also a men's forum which may be of interest. Best wishes!

Hi, and welcome to PC. I'm 44 and also broke up w my gf of five years due to the onset of depression two years ago. It was a huge blow to my self esteem and caused me to further plunder into a depressive fog including job loss. I'm better now, but I still feel it's effects at times. I've been trying to work through my many issues, with my pdoc as well as taking my meds religiously. I've worked my way out of my major depression about 8 mos ago, but hav had little bouts here and there. Time is your best friend now, you will eventually feel better.

PC is a wealth of info and advice.

Take good care of yourself,

Mike

I know this isn't what you want to hear, but being alone just plain sucks! I too am there with loss of appetite (eating is a four letter word for me) and increased smoking at times. While we are supposed to do things for ourselves, it's much more enjoyable doing them for or with someone else! Let's face it, people do need people (didn't Barbara Striesand have a song like that?). There are times when we want to be alone, which is fine. But for the most part it's a pain and hurts! About all I can say is some days are easier than others.
