I admit that this is not always possible... but I think music can be a powerful influence on mood and just as some seem to go hand in hand with depression (couple of threads here that are titled 'songs that describe your depression') I thought it might make a change to add a thread that is to do with songs we turn to try and lift, distract, help

At work we have redundancies coming up and a couple of songs sprang to mind so happy to get this started:

Fred Astaire: Lets face the music and dance:

Traveling Wilburys: End of the Line:

Frank Sinatra: My Way:

I accept some of these won't be your thing... but this is about songs that uplift you, so please add your additions

A few months ago I had this on repeat on my ipod, haven't listened to it for a while, not sure that music works for me anymore. Still I remember that it helped me once upon a time. The lyrics are pretty and to me the song has the quality of a lullaby.

Thanks for this!

I used to listen to loud rock music to bring me out of a depressed mood. That doesn't work so good for me anymore, but there is a Christian song that soothes my soul called "Be Still and Know that I am God".
Thanks for this!

My sons LOVE Weird Al Yankovic and although I never opt to play it while on my own, when I'm around them and listening to it I can't help but laugh. "The Saga Begins", "Yoda", "I Want a New Duck", and "The White Stuff" are the ones that make me smile every time. Oh - and "Christmas at Ground Zero" - great for making me laugh at my own fatalistic attitude any time of year. I wouldn't want to listen to his stuff all day long but hearing it once in a while is kind of fun. It's irreverent and clever. Good stuff.

I indulge in my guilty pleasure of a Japanese pop band called Orange Range. They have a song called Natural Pop that always gets me singing along.
Thanks for this!

Struggling with ptsd, depression, and anxiety, I haven't sang in quite awhile and always found it a stress release. I decided today to try singing again to my favorite band Sigur Ros and their singer Jonsi's solo stuff. It's beautiful and positive. Sang this through a couple times this morning...
Jonsi changed my life a few years ago, and since our fire 6 months ago it's just turned for the worst again. Haven't felt like music since, but trying...

There are some very nice religious songs that lighten my mood, particularly any of the songs written and sung by John Michael Talbot. I do like Sigur Ros as well and thanks for the link to Jonsi's solo stuff.

I hate to be a hick here... but beachin by Jake Owen makes me so happy and relaxed. Course that's how country music is for me. Also classical music helps . All of me by john legend is nice too.

Took me a moment for it to click and then 'dire straights' popped up. Loved Brothers in arms!

The song you linked is pretty nice and chilled, thank you!

Not religious.... but I agree, some songs irrespective of what your own beliefs are can be very uplifting. there was one song that I loved well before it clicked 'this is about god' and still loved it I think fits for this thread

The Source: You've got the love:

Haha! Yeah, I love Weird Al too.... for a guy that has been churning stuff out since the 80's (I think?) he has aged really well and still has kept the creative juices flowing. Love the saga begins! Thanks for reminding me

Haha, got to admit I do have a bit of a soft spot for American country... probably part credit to my Mum who had a crush on Kris Kristopheson when I was a kid heh... would play all kinds on the record player.

I remember hearing a song while in China (odd place to hear it but yeah) by Chris Cagle... was thousands of miles away from my girlfriend for the year (we're married now) and this song helped

What a beautiful day:

I just listened to this whole album by Jack's Mannequin called Everthing In Transit. It always reminds me of summer and summer cheers me up sometimes

Franz Ferdinand as a general rule. They're upbeat and weird.
Same thing with Foo Fighters - straightforward rock, hard to be sad to (but again, depends on what you listen to.)
Even Queens of the Stone Age.

Couple more that I was listening to today

One has a god awful 80's vid (sorry about that) but I like Tom Petty: Won't back down:

The other was a classical piece (quite famous)

Holst: Jupiter:
