That's the logical thing to do if you're depressed right? What if you do more than you think but still end up failing? Because after all, isn't our thinking the main problem? Because if we didn't have these thoughts we wouldn't act the way we do. How do we take action with a distorted and f***ed up mindset? Sure, you might be able to for a little, but sooner or later, you'll quit because you haven't solved the root of the problem, your thoughts. But the question is, how do you change your thoughts? My mindset kind of goes like this. Parents: overcoming this illness is going to be very, very, difficult. Thoughts in my head: it's that hard? I can't even do easy things, why would I even try to do this? I just can't get out of this mindset, it seems like the truth in your head, but people say that your thoughts are distorted and not true.

Hi lonewolf. Welcome to the community. Depression is a cruel illness. It will tell you that you are a failure. You are not a failure. Yes, when we suffer depression we will have distorted thinking, but we can't give up. I would try doing small, little things. And when you set a small tiny goal, and accomplish that little tiny goal, give yourself a pat on the back and some sort of reward. Then set a slightly bigger goal and move forward. Best wishes.
Thanks for this!

You are never failing if you are trying to get better.
Everyday we are in the fight is a Victory!
That would be every day of our lives

You are not a failure, you are a winner - you are fighting this battle along with the rest of us, every single day. It's hard, but you haven't given up - therefore you couldn't possibly be a failure!
Thanks for this!

Someone once told me that our thoughts and emotions are ok to have, but to remember that this is all they are- thoughts and emotions- not fact, or a permanent state of being. The question still remains, how do I stop them from affecting me so much? ... I can't figure that part out.

does not always work, but can help. If you can bring yourself to accomplish even one small thing and feel good about it, that's a huge benefit. Sometimes faking it to make it. . .

Since the depression came back, I keep finding myself repeating mantras in my head when things crash. One of them is this: "feelings do no dictate reality." I have to keep reminding myself that my emotions are lying to me. It's hard; as an artist, I run a lot on emotion and instinct. I'm really struggling trying to find a new normal.
