I wasn't exactly sure where to put this topic but since I think it stems from my feelings of worthlessness, I'll put it here!
So I'm supposed to write a little biography about myself for something related to my job. Something that can be read all over the place actually, so that's rather intimidating. But, I'm hitting a wall. I just *can't* write positively about myself right now, it feels like I'm a fraud or something trying to make up nice pretty details about my "successful" life and what I do. I've procrastinated for weeks about this and it HAS to get done. Right now I feel like a giant failure in life and I don't know if I can fake it. Maybe if I just write as if my life is how I would *like* it to be. I'm not entirely sure what that looks like. How about, not being depressed (ha). Have any of you had to talk yourself up like this and just felt awful about it? Maybe even for an interview? How did you do it? |

I think I've had this problem before. It sort of feels like "where do I even begin? Do I actually tell them about myself or do I just write some superficial things that don't really mean anything?"
One thing that I tried to do was think about things I like; music, sports, politics, tv shows etc. I also tried to not make too big a deal out of it which it seems like it might be a little late for that for you haha but its ok, like most things you'll do it and move on and probably forget about it soon enough. I never really feel like I have any accomplishments and I am far too modest to ever draw attention to anything I might have done worthy of praise. In interviews I simply try to apply past experiences to whatever job I'm applying for so people think I have some skills that might come in handy. |

Those are good suggestions, thank you. I still haven't written it yet, heheh. It will be done this weekend!! Even if I have to make it up! I'm going to have my husband help me think of stuff.

Use the facts; where you live, what you do, what you like best, what your hopes and dreams are. Volia! And include your cat >^..^<

Be gentle with yourself- take the weight off first-- the weight you carry to say it "right" -- or exactly "perfect" their is no perfect way to describe yourself. Do you have someone you know personally who could help you write it? You don't have to tell them the specific issues you're having... but sometimes other people can find the good in us more than we can find in ourselves. we can be our own worst enemies. However, I am a writer and people ask me for help with different things (similar to what you're describing all the time) Find someone you know who is good with words... who says you have to be the one to write it? It's not like a term paper or major project for the job is it? Just a description. Go get some help with it if you can! It's so normal to try to get some tips.. just like people get tips for resume writing!

Do I ever have a hard time talking about myself? I think for me the more appropriate question would be do I ever have an *easy* time talking about myself.

I'd just write about major milestones and accomplishments in your life, your hobbies, just a brief summation of your time on this Earth. Hope you're able to write something you're happy with. May I ask, what is it you have to write this for at work? Just a company bio? My old job featured one employee every month in our newsletter, with a short little bio and lists of likes/dislikes, hobbies, et cetera. |

I have never met anyone who does not wilt inside at the prospect of these, except for a few egomaniacs who everyone despised and did down whenever the opportunity arose. Are there not examples on the websites of other firms in your industry to give you an idea?

Well, I finally wrote the stupid thing!! What I ended up doing is looking at the structure of someone else's bio in my industry and using her format, but just putting in my info. It got me through it!
The bio is actually going on craft product packaging... I'm an artist. So, this product is all over the place in the USA and even overseas. I think that's part of what made it super intimidating for me, like, let's tell the whole USA that I'm a failure but I'll make something up that sounds better than what I really think about myself! Soon I'm going to have to do it again but for a different format, and it will be longer. And include questions about "home life". GAaaaaaahhhhh..... |

I pretty much feel like this whenever I have to write anything about myself for English classes, since I really haven't done a whole lot of anything in my life.

I can relate to this. I have a hard time relating anything really to me that is good. Right now for of my college courses we have to pick a movie, show, or song that relates to our life. Once we choose this we are supposed to be giving a presentation on this and how it is connected to us.
I tried to think of something for two weeks, and couldn't come up with anything at all. So now I have something a classmate suggested and somehow I am to make it relate to me... |

I have that as well. Somebody asked me on Monday to name 5 good qualities about myself and I sat staring at my keyboard for the longest time ever. I really like the suggestions given and I am going to use them when going for interviews in future!
