So I have a doctor's appt. coming up in a few days...just for a regular physical, but my mom is going with me. Well, lately my depression has been getting really bad again, and I've been thinking of asking for meds because I am pretty desperate at this point. Thing is, I haven't been on meds for over two years. The only 2 antidepressants I've ever tried have been Prozac and Zoloft, both made me physically sick and didn't help with my depression at all. However, I'm willing to give meds another shot because I'm getting bad again and I don't know how else I will get through it...Meds may be my only option. I can't do therapy because I can't keep regular weekly appointments due to lack of transportation. My mom and I are lucky we even have a ride to this upcoming one. That being said, I feel like this would be my only chance to ask. I want to talk to my mom about seeing if we could ask the doctor on Fri. about referring us to someone who could prescribe me something. I don't know how to go about this though, because I'm pretty shy when it comes to talking to my mom about my "issues". She's always been pretty supportive, or at least she acts like it. But deep down inside I have this irrational fear that she secretly doesn't believe I'm in pain and thinks I'm just being a regular hormonal teenager. How should I ask her about this? I have 3 days to work up the courage to talk to her and come to a decision.

Ask...depression is real. Though I'm way past being a teenager, I think that medication can work. It worked for me in the past. I can't do regular therapy appointments either. I've been on and off of medication. Some worked (lexapro - the first time; cymbalta) and others didn't (effexor, remeron, wellbutrin). Now I'm on to viibryd because the doc had samples (and my insurance has no rx coverage)...When I knew that I needed medication, my intuitive MD knew it as well, mainly because when he asked how I was doing, I just broke down and started weeping. So best wishes with this...

So what if you are a teenager? Teenagers get clinically depressed too. You mom should understand this. Get the meds.

Medication never did anything for me, it might for you though.

I don't think any of us willy nilly just wake up one day and decide we will take happy pills. It is a difficult decision.

If you didn't have luck with Prozac or Zoloft (SSRI's) I would suggest one of the SSNRI's like Effexor, Pristiq, Fetzima, or Cymbalta, or even Wellbutrin.

You have to take it four to six weeks to see if it will work and get over any side effects you may have. Usually they go away. If the side effects are just unbearable you have to call the doc and discuss it and maybe try another one. If you get a rash or hives or any kind of allergic reaction stop right away. Those are rare. That's kinda how it goes.

Well, I talked to my mom about it a little bit ago.
She says we'll see about it if I really want to. I'm relieved...

Gosh. Just be honest with the doctor about how you are feeling. And about things like sleep, eating, etc. Hope all goes well. Maybe your doc will want to do some blood work as well.
