I can't get myself to work. It's not that I'm distracted or hyper, I just flat out don't want to get out of bed and do anything. I've totally lost interest in my job. This is especially bad because I'm self-employed.

Recently I've thought that maybe it's low-grade depression, but I'm not sure. I'm not suicidal or anything like that, but I just feel resigned. I tell myself, frodo, you've got to work hard or you won't succeed, but it doesn't seem to matter. There's no emotional weight to that consequence.

what could this be?

It could be depression. Look for a description of depression on the homepage of this website and see if you have any other symptoms.

Only a professional can give you an actual diagnosis, but we can help you decide if it would be a good idea to see a doc. If something is keeping you from working I'd say that's a good reason to find someone.

If you don't know a mental healthcare professional you can ask your doctor or ask at a local hospital or clinic.

sounds like depression to me. if it was "just" a physical ailment that zapped your energy, your mind would be urging you to go, do...

try and think about what obstacles you have recently hit in your work... maybe you can sort out some one thing that has stumped you, blocked you, and makes you feel like giving up? If you can go around it or get rid of it, you' might be able to get back on track?

Exactly! What Dexter said! Depression or something else? Talk to your doctor. He might be able to recommend something to take or someone to see. In the meantime, we're here for you.

Does it feel like you've basically just shut down? Maybe something has upset you that has provoked this lack of feeling.

I also vote for a doc's opinion, esp. before it continues any longer.

Best of luck.

Hi Frodo , come on in, take your shoes off and sit a spell.

Everyone is right, talk to your doctor even a family doctor can help, they can give you that depression quiz to see if it is depression or what.

It won't hurt to go and in the mean time we are here for you.

Congratulations on seeking help. I agree with everyone else about a doctor's opinion. I am also new here but have a lot of experience with depression, especially low grade depression. The good news is, there is a lot of help out there, and a lot of solutions. Don't give up until you find one that works for you, your new life could just be beginning.

I'm somewhat concerned about going to a medical doctor. There are consequences. For example, I got juvenile diabetes late in life and now that it's on record, I can't get a commercial driver's license in some states. There was no way to avoid going to a doctor for that, because without insulin I'd die eventually.

But no way I want to permanently penalize myself for feeling unmotivated sometimes. I'd maybe talk to a counselor, because they don't interact with the medical system, but noone with the power to ruin my life.

The decision is yours of course. I have never experienced any negative consequences by going to a doctor. I accept my disease and that there may be some limitations placed on me because of it, however I always have many choices. I suggest you read some literature about depression, especially about cognative thinking errors typical of depression and see if you can relate to any of them. It is difficult to understand in a depressed state, but we have many more choices than our disease tells us.
