Isn't depression a sad event? I was saddened by the death of writer David Foster Wallace who taught at Pomona College here in Claremont. The brain is a chemical thing, do you know how these chemical get mixed up wrong to produce the horrible ailment that is depression? It would be educational to know.

Nobody knows.

Depression being the result of chemical changes in the brain is a theory. Maybe chemical changes produce depression. Maybe depression produces chemical changes. Maybe both of those things are true. Maybe neither is true. No one really has a firm handle on any of this. But lots of people have theories, and lots are really sure that this theory or that is true.

The link that says error still works.

No one knows for sure. A living human brain is extremely hard to study. More is being learned all the time.

Depression is a very broad term with many possible causes.

I believe in my case, for many reasons, that it is primarily caused by genetics and biology. Meaning changes in neurotransmitters, receptors, neuro pathways, synatpogenisis, neuro genesis, or whatever, precede the depression.

In my opinion, it can be chemical. But there can be many other reasons for depression. The other possibilities I can think of are: diet, vitamin deficiency, body chemistry (other than at the brain), an illness lurking - cancer being a good example, heart problems, past and/or present experiences (PTSD), hereditary, others in family depressed, and many others.
