Hi,
I have hypothyroidism. Recently lost one of my family member and had breakup. Lost appetite and interest. Doctor (endocrinologist) told me that I am under depression and he prescribed me Depsonil 25 for one month. Should i need to take this as this was not prescribed by Psychiatrist?? |

Hypothyroidism can for sure cause depression. I hope he also prescribed you synthroid and is going to get your thyroid levels worked out.
Plus what you have been through. I have no idea why he would prescribe such an old antidepressant unless he feels it is a one month temporary thing. The new ones can take that long to start working. It says below that imipramine can take two weeks to start working. It's really up to you whether to take it or not. The very most important thing would be getting your thyroid level right. Imipramine (Tofranil, Janimine, Antideprin, Depremil, Deprimin, Deprinol, Depsonil, Dynaprin) - Anti-depressants.com

Second of all, I would suggest a couple of things. Look up the drug on the internet. Imipramine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Note the severe side effects and the LIFE-THREATENING side effects in bold. Note that this is a very early antidepressant drug that was mostly used before the advent of SSRIs (which also don't work well). Also, since you have doubts, maybe it's worth it to get a second opinion from a professional. Speaking as an anonymous guy on the internet, what I think the best plan is for dealing with depression can be found in post #74 of this thread http://forums.psychcentral.com/depre...n-escaped.html Notice that I think it's a terrible idea to start taking antidepressants before trying healthy safe ways of resolving a depression unless you are in a really desperate state. ![]() |

Yeah imipramine was the first antidepressant ever discovered and can have some heavy side effects. It might be a wise choice for someone with chronic severe treatment resistant depression as a try when nothing has worked. It is effective.
In your case I would really question his choice of prescribing one at all and that one in particular. Maybe he figures it is more fast acting and taking it a month or two while the thyroid levels get balanced can help you get over a hump. I know my niece went through a really bad patch when they were getting her thyroid levels right. She was taking the med everyday after being diagnosed and was in Hawaii on an internship when she got severely depressed. They got the levels worked out and she has been fine since. She did tell me she would never judge someone with depression again after going through that. She had absolutely no control over it and here she was away from home and doctor in Hawaii.
