So I've been really depressed lately and I have an appointment with my psychiatrist next week. Problem is I really don't want to get committed so I wanna be sure what to say.
I have suicidal thoughts, but I would never act on them. Thats the truth. But I've done some searching and it looks like they have to say something if you admit to having suicidal thoughts. Maybe the laws are different between states because I remember telling my first doctor (in MN) about suicidal thoughts and nothing happened. If it does matter, I live in California now. I know I should just tell the truth but I have a job that I can't lose so I don't want to get committed or be placed on that 72 hour hold or anything. Thanks to anyone that can help Last edited by Wren_; Mar 21, 2015 at 12:18 AM. Reason: Added trigger icon |

If you tell a psychiatrist that you have plans to follow through with the thoughts, then tgey are mandated to report it. However, the thoughts alone won't be enough to get you committed since it's a common symptom of depression.
Hopes this helps. ![]() |

Hi smellyfinger. I understand your predicament. I think many of us with depression have suicidal thoughts sometimes. I am like you, I have the thoughts but would never act on them. I believe there is a difference between having the thoughts and actually making active plans.
On the one hand you don't want to be sent to a hospital, but on the other hand, if you don't tell your pdoc how bad you feel they won't be able to help you. Word things in a way that tells your pdoc you are reaching out for help. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
