Patronising behaviour, invalidation and "tough love" strike me as an odd form of "help" from GP's and mental health? workers? (I live in the UK )

I'm sorry you have had such a bad experience. I don't blame you for growling.

The times I have encountered similar, after the shock wears off (if it wears off), I start to wonder where these attitudes originate. Is it natural to these individuals? Do they pick it up in their education and training? Is it a part of their specific workplace's culture?

Growl as much as you need to Fuzzybear. Sorry you are having such a horrible time!
I so wish we could do something to help with this brick wall your head seems to be trying to bang a hole in.

Don't forget you are a lovely person, you still support people even with all this going on.

Oh, Fuzzy, I hate patronizing! I hate it too much! It should be an eleventh commandment: "Thou shalt not patronize" I am serious!

I got patronised too, I saw my GP with a problem with my neck. He asked "What do you expect me to do?" I must have been thinking clearly for once because I retorted "I expect you to treat me as you would expect to be treated yourself?" I got a referral to a specialist clinic

Mental health services in the UK are the pits and I don't think any of the political promises that are being made will help those of us who need more than a sticking plaster. We'll get shoved to the bottom of the pile as per usual. We all need proper support, no matter what our age or circumstances.

I agree. It's quite redundant. I already feel awful, I don't think feeling more awful will snap me into reality. I'm sorry you had to go through that. The sad thing is, most people don't really get it so they actually think they are helping. The irony never stops being amusing. Perhaps you can work towards better health care providers and if they don't exist around where you are, get what you need and leave. It's sad but you can't work towards convincing people and work through your illness as well.

Fuzzy, I don't blame you for growling. The patronizing behavior and tough love just makes it like the doc is looking down on you. These people are supposed to be helpful, not hurtful. I am so sorry you had to deal with this. You deserve better.

Hi Fuzzy

Lots of sympathy for you. I have had some good but also some very bad experiences with GPs and mental health services in the UK. I know a lot of people get offered no help at all. But there is no excuse to treat someone badly.

Are there any mental health charities near you? Some offer support or befriending or activities. Just an idea, you may not feel up to it.

I read a lot about the medical care in the UK. Thanks to obamacare, what little care was available to the poor has been wrecked. Thank the Good Lord that my mental health agency is run separately from the health department.
Hugs to you, FuzzyDear. You deserve better.

He asked "What do you expect me to do?" I must have been thinking clearly for once because I retorted "I expect you to treat me as you would expect to be treated yourself? - Brilliant answer!

It is fashionable to have nothing good to say about the NHS (Thanks Messrs Farage/Cameron) but a 2014 US report makes clear the disadvantages of the alternatives: NHS is the world's best healthcare system, report says | Society | The Guardian

Beware chucking baby out with bathwater is what I am trying to say.
