Lithium is most known for treatment of bipolar - it may have other uses that I'm not familiar with...

I would suggest calling pdoc back and getting some clarification. He may suspect something but not sure yet? Since your concerned - I would call..

I took it years ago for being Unipolar which is when as my pdoc described my up was about what other people's normal is and my lows are like way low and happen really quick. It is a derivative of depression not bipolar but ... it is certainly something to discuss with your T.

Hi Ouch,

Yes, sometimes Lithium is used to treat severe depression. It can be added to other antidepressants if you're not responding, especially if you're struggling with suicidal thoughts...apparently sometimes it can help. I was on it this winter myself for those reasons. As others have said, if you have additional questions, it's good to contact your physician about it, but prescribing Lithium doesn't necessarily mean that they think you are bipolar. It can indeed be used to treat depression.

Take care,
ErinBear

I too was started on litium recently and was concerned like you.He has got me on 450mg a day.I will be increased again this week.
I have been really struggling with my depression for over a year.Im not feeling anything from the drug other than I think it helps me control some self harm.
There is a history of bipolar in my family so I think I was put on lithium until I see a pdoc.
Good luck ,feel free to PM
