Who here is also on Metformin?

I suffer 'Atypical Depression' and went through a horrible bout of it this spring and summer. One of the symptoms is extreme weight gain (5-10% per month). My doctors have placed me on METFORMIN to counteract the weight gain.

I've mentioned it a few times in posts here. It's a diabetic medication but recently has been used off label to manage this kind of significant gain.

The weight stabilized and in recent weeks I have even found I have lost some.

Hi rcat
I'm on it and another one, but I'm type 2 diabetic. It took years before I lost weight, but I don't credit that med for it, it was more the stress of depression and things happening in life. My doc told me it helps because it makes you lose your appetite. I know I did for a while but now my antidepressant is making me hungry much of the time. Also I'm sure you know, it slows how the blood sugar is released. Have you noticed a fishy smell, just curious. If i put my nose in the bottle, yuck, I thought no wonder I don't have an appetite.

I hadn't heard it was used for weight loss. Honestly, if I had a choice I wouldn't take it. I know one reason I was losing weight, which wasn't a pleasant one. Really hard on the stomach and bowel issues if you know what I mean. Many can't tolerate it. I'm glad it's helping you though.

I have a condition called PCOS (poly-cystic ovarian syndrome) and metformin is commonly used to help treat it (for a couple of reasons but one includes that those with PCOS are higher risk for diabetes). Well, I'm not really overweight but I wanted to lose about 10 more pounds that weren't coming off with diet and exercise - my doctor gave me metformin to see if it would help. For the record it didn't really, but since I wasn't overweight to start with, that might have been why.

I'm so glad it has helped you, long may it last and help you feel better generally.

I am on met-no adverse reactions . I am a type 2 diabetic and have taken it for ten years. You might be interested in the recent story on met . They believe it may prolong life spans by as much as 50 percent because it oxygenates your cells , I don't know if I believe all that , its just nice to know they don't think it shortens it . I take 4 ea 500mg er a day . I have lost weight but because I was on a strict diet . It is very old stable drug and if you take it with food and not have a adverse reaction its a good one . It is generic and fairly cheap . If anything it tends to constipate me . We are all different .

So are doctors just giving out metformin for weight management? Because I could really use that! My weight has definitely become a challenge. It used to be easier to lose it but now all I do is gain!

If you're referring to my post that's not quite what I meant, but kind of. I have a medical condition that is commonly treated by metformin. My doctor was willing to put me on metformin to see if it would help weight loss, but only because I had the other condition.
