So I am scared shyteless about this new job I'm going to be starting in 2 weeks.
I could barely get myself to finally give my notice to my manager today. Like...duh!....I kind of have to tell the man that I'm not going to be there anymore! I have only told 1 person in my family. None of my friends know. What is the matter with me???? I know what the matter is. I'm scared to paralysis that I'm going to screw this up. I'm scared my ADD is going to trip me up in the mornings and I'm not going to get out of the house to commute to the office and arrive ON TIME. (I will have to be getting up a LOT earlier in the morning than I have been in years to commute.) I'm scared I'm giving myself more credit than I deserve and that it's only a matter of time before they find out that I'm not capable and fire me. I'm scared the more people I tell, the more I invite the universe to rip the rug out from under my feet. I'm terrified. I'm so f'ing terrified. This is my whole life: if I screw this up, I'm done for. Nobody and nothing to fall back on. HELP. Please, please, please help. |

so much bad stuff has happened to me - I don't have repetitive negative thoughts in a vacuum - there's lots of source material for them in my past!!! Holy God, I feel like I'm spinning out of control.

This is a fresh start and you are determined to do well or else you wouldn't be so scared. Breathe. Not telling others is a coping skill I use also, don't know if it is a good one or a bad one but I hope the 1 person in you family who does know can be supportive. I hope you are able to find someone supportive to whom you can confide your fears and who can help you deal with them one at a time and prepare you for this wonderful new job opportunity. If you don't have anyone IRL rely on us here.

I'm sure you've planned your new commute and waking earlier. Practice it if you think that will help, just to give yourself confidence that you will be able to do it and get you into the swing of it.
Good luck and I am EXCITED for this new job for you! Try not to let the fear cripple you over the next two weeks. I know you won't be able to completely alleviate it but whatever coping skills you can use to relax... And I'm hoping that in a month you'll look back and laugh at how scared you were. I know the new job may be a challenge but hoping it is a good, rewarding challenge with good people, good coworkers, a good work environment, and lots of self confidence building when you see how good you are doing there!

Hi Lavendersage,
Yes, breathe, meditate, listen to soothing music in a darkened room. Think on this: Your cv stood up to scrutiny and your qualifications make you competent. Your interview - stressful - showed your new Employer you were the best, most personable, most ideal fit for the team out of all the candidates. Your References - I assume they were taken - spoke highly of your skills and work ethic and confirmed your suitability. In the minds of those who suffer Depression and Anxiety, we self-sabotage, thinking subconsciously that nothing good can ever happen to us, or that we are undeserving. We have to make a real effort to override these negatives, but it can be done. You can do it, you will succeed. I would use the next fortnight to acclimatise myself to the new active hours, even try a dry-run commute if it is possible. Do not think you are going to jinx things by telling friends and family, talking about it more may make it more real and calm your mind. Above all else, believe in your abilities as others do. Dave.

Thank you Dexter, Dave, Elevated. Funny: you all counseled me the same thing: breathe. I am trying. I'll re-read your posts when I feel I'm going Chicken Little again.

We're here to remind you to breathe lavender and remind you that if you have moments of confidence they are real for all for all of the reasons EnglishDave pointed out. Keep those as a mantra because those are true reasons for inner confidence and external reminders that you should have inner confidence.

Hi lavendarsage... Just back today to say I was thinking of this and of you today and hope you are relaxing and, dare say, starting to look forward to your new job. Once you are in there and getting into the swing of the new routine you are going to be great!

I stayed fairly level-headed today. I only noticed panic beginning to bubble below my surface towards the end of the work-day. I'm just trying not to think about it. I wish all of you could hold hands with me and go to work with me that first week. How ludicrous would that look?!?! "Oh, don't mind them, they're just my friends; my cheerleading section. While they're around I won't fall to the floor in a jibbering idiot way. It's all good." |

Panic just LOVES to spoil the fun. It's like the nosy neighbor, Gladys, from Bewitched, always poking their beak in and sneaking around looking for an "in". ![]() |
