For the past few months, I think I’ve been suffering from depression. I’ve been going to the library for lunch times because I feel strikingly alone with my friends. I haven’t told my dad and I don’t have a relationship with my mother. I have told 1 of my friends. I’ve been chatting online with online counsellors and they all say I need to see a therapist of sorts, but I’m 14 so I need my parents permission. I really don’t know what to do, I feel like I can’t talk to anyone but that I don’t see an end in sight.

I have a 15 year old daughter and I think it's great you want to talk to someone! The first place to start would be your school guidance counselor or mental health counselor. Have you spoken to either one of them? If not have you checked to see if there agencies that serve youth in your city or county? You don't need parental consent to see a counselor that I know of.

Hi Vanishing,

I wasn't much younger than you when I was first diagnosed with depression, many of my lunch hours were also spent in the library or a quiet place as I felt that isolation from my peers. Big Hugs. You are not alone.

Can you talk to your Dad? If not, how about making an appointment to see your local GP? I am also in Australia and a GP can assess your mental health and perhaps give a referral to see a psychologist or a counselor under a mental health access plan, this is also covered by medicare. This could also make speaking to your dad about what you are going through much easier.

Keep posting here, this place is here to support you and you are more than welcome to PM me if you need to talk about anything

Take care

I've tried to tell my dad, the online counsellors told me to try writing a letter and handing that to him. I wrote it but couldn't give it to him. I'm going to give headspace a call on Monday and see if they need a parent's consent, hopefully not. My school counsellor makes me uncomfortable. I really like this forum, everyone seems so friendly and supportive

I'm pretty sure parental consent is needed in Australia, but I'm going to check again. My school counsellor makes me uncomfortable. For now I'll stay on here and keep posting, I'm sure this will help

Ok, whatever we can do to help. A word of advice, if I may. If you have a mental illness, it will need to get dx and treated. If you would like to hear my experience at 15 and what I would've done different if I could please send me a pm. Good luck and I hope you find us useful.
