I'm wondering when do other people decide when it's bad enough you need to check yourself in?

I don't have an active suicidal plan or anything, but the loneliness and crying just don't seem to stop.

I went to a hospital after disclosing to my counselor that I had an active plan to end my life. But there were people there who weren't suicidal, they just had difficulty with daily functioning and needed extra help.
If you need more help than you can get in outpatient services, then that's when to consider a hospital stay.

Me personally I'll never go back. After my first intake experience I have never felt so humiliated. If it is meds you need talk to your doctor about that. If you goto a hospital it won't do you any good.

The first time in a hospital for me wasn't really my choice as much as it was a "professional's".
The second time kind of was because my friend talked me into it, and I don't blame him for it. The first time, I needed help, sure but I don't think I needed to be committed. The second time, I was actually suicidal. My friend walked in on me as I was doing it. He stopped me and talked me down. Then he helped me tell my fiance and the next morning my fiance drove me to the front door with my stuff, gave me a kiss and I walked in.
When someone "needs" the help is subjective to that person and their situation. If you feel you need it, check into it and see if you can. If you don't feel like you're quite at that point, then don't. It really does depend on what you feel you need.

For me personally I'd avoid hospital if it was at all possible
I'm in the uk and I don't know personally anyone here in the uk who has been helped... It can be very humiliating. But some people from other countries have found it saved their lives (but others have found it painful and humiliating)
