So, I have been coping with money issues for a very long time. I am currently unemployed (I have not been able to find a job in the area I live in, and have
barriers to employment as well). I am 24 and a university student. I receive disability assistance for severe anxiety/depression. Although I am grateful for the fact that I receive any money at all, it seems to always run out before the next payment. I do my best to budget it, but it never seems to last. I currently live with my mother (due to my financial issues). However, I am responsible for a large portion of items for the household. I am the only one who really buys/goes grocery shopping, and that is where most of my money goes. So I can never really save any money or pay off student debt. I want to try my best to budget it even better in the future, however, I am not going to get any money for over a week. My mom does not have any money right now. I asked her if she was going to borrow money or anything, and she said no (we usually help each other if one of us has money and the other one doesn't). So I ended up borrowing money from my sibling, but it was a small amount. Anyways, at my university they have a program where you can have a grocery store coupon worth $50 in emergency situations. There is a maximum of 4 per student (I took three of them last year, which is embarrassing). So I guess if I wanted to I could ask for the last one, but I feel really ashamed doing that. I am just worried that the small amount of money I have is going to be gone before next week, so I considered that option to be safe. Do you think this is ok?

I feel depressed because of finances myself. I live by myself and own a condo. There was a time that I was able to swing it very well and have money to buy fairly high ticket items and take trips. Not anymore. I don't know what happened! I have not received a raise in a while and feel very lucky to have my job. Plus I had medical expenses that killed me. I have insurance from the company, but it does not cover everything. And I got a lot of itty bitty expenses to pay that have been killing me.

It sounds like you'd feel more comfortable waiting on that coupon for a few more days. It also sounds like you've got a good bit of shame wrapped up in your financial situation, which I think is normal and very valid. (I struggle with feeling bad about money myself, not making enough of it, not being able to be independent, ect.) So in my personal opinion I think it would help your mental health more in the end to wait and see if you can stretch the dollars you have left till your next disability check.
When that check comes in it might also help to sit down with your mom and let her know what you can and can't pay for. Just really try to have a constructive discussion on what you both can change and what you can't as far as budgeting goes. But I know that's easier said than done, and your situation also might not allow for that candid of a talk. Just throwing that out there though. All my love and support go to you, my dear. I've been in that dark place between checks most my adult life. |
