The only real reason we are here is because our parents brought us here (without any of us asking for it). I wish there was a ticket to go back

Yes, I believe we are here for a reason. We may not know why but we are.

Yes. I think I am here to make people smile, even though I often struggle to smile myself. I'm agnostic but maybe there's an afterlife, a grand plan, something that I won't figure out in my lifetime but others might. Even if there's no afterlife, I'd like to make the most of what I have and help others in any small way that I can.

Can't say that I do. I'm generally of the opinion that there is no point to any of this.

Our search for purpose and meaning to our lives is actually closely linked to our overall mental well-being. Those who feel they have an overarching purpose tend to lead happier lives.
Ultimately, though, the search for objective meaning is in the same wheelhouse as the existence of God...it's not something we will ever have a firm answer on objectively, but we each decide for ourselves based on the evidence we see in our individual lives. I tend to think that both exist (an objective meaning to our lives and the existence of a higher power). But ultimately, we are too zoomed in (so to speak) to truly understand either. Our job is to look at our experiences, reflect on them, and then choose how to proceed based on that. As more experiences come our way, we get more information to work with.

Someone once said that we spend half of our lives trying to assign a meaning to life, and the other half desperately trying to forget that we have done that.
Otherwise I can somewhat resonate with what Anxious Minds said...That, from this human perspective this is a question impossible to answer. And I feel that a perspective that's outside of our mortal box would render this question obsolete. There are some who claim that you can get into that outside perspective even while in this human shape, where there is the realisation that indeed there is no reason or meaning in life and that we are not separate from life and paradoxically letting go of all the attachment to meaning makes life feel meaningful and full of beauty. Others say that even this above is just an experience of the personal perspective and that we can never know anything and searching for reason is inevitable even if you know there is no reason. But most of us somehow seem to be always searching for some meaning and I think that's a beautiful part of being human ![]() |

The question was about if we think we are here for a reason. I answered yes because I believe in God. (I'm not inviting to a discussion about if God exists or not, or if this or that religion is the right one. I only want to say something from the platform I stand upon). From my point of view we are created in the image of God and that means everything to me. I am here to honor God in the way I use my life. Many Christians might say that depressed people are lazy. I don't share in such a stupid idea and I try to stay away from such people because the only thing they do is to make us, depressed people, feeling worse.
So, how do I honor God from my depressed place in the world? That has taken me along time to figure out. This explanation will not cover it all: I think that God loves us all from the person highest in rank to the beggar in the street. How can the beggar in the street show honor to God? The same way that we all can do (I mean those of us who believe in God). To pray, love their neighbors and work (since they are beggars their work is begging). When I'm saying so, that doesn't mean that I think the it is fair that some are rich and others poor. But it has become this way because somebody took too much for themselves. Their ability to show charity was not well formed. They failed to take care of the Earth and everything upon it as God told them (Genesis). Back to the beggars and to depression: I think that when the beggars can honor God by using their talents (begging), why cannot I do the same from my "place" of depression? I cannot snap my low energy away, but the little I have left I can use in many ways. I can take an education (if I'm well enough to do that), I can do voluntary work, I can take care of my health by swallow the medication I need, - can eat healthy, - go outside and try to enjoy the beauty in a park and more ...., I can still fold my hands to pray. There are many options that can be meaningful even in the life of a depressed. To have faith is to have ground beneath one's feet, there is a reason to not give in. People will have to find their own meaning. Jews, Christians, Muslims, the Bahá'í faith, many of the religions who believe in reincarnation included Buddhism, all gives meaning to those belonging to those religions. Buddhism has also secular "living-rules" (if any Buddhists reads this , please forgive me for making it seem so simple ("living-rules"), but that was a way to say it short. Even the agnostics think that perhaps there is a meaning and perhaps there is an afterlife, but we don't know it yet. This has become too long already, but let me try to say it relatively short: From my platform and many other religions we are here for a purpose. Others don't know ... What I mean is, without trying to act like a judge, (I have many days when I feel I hurt too much and are not able to do so much): Try to make the best out of it, follow the 'Golden Rule' that binds us all together in an attempt to care for each other. ![]() ![]() |
