... Gratitude lists imply that those of us who are in pain are choosing misery and just aren't working hard enough and that if we just think happy thoughts we'll float up above our problems...

My ingratitude lists helped me grieve the things that I'd lost, missed out on, been cheated out of and all the times life had kicked me straight in the heart. I learned that stuffing down anger and sadness with a stack of gratitude lists doesn't make them go away. Writing down the things that made me miserable and furious didn't make them go away either, but it helped me focus on the things in life that I wanted to change because they caused me suffering over and over again. My ingratitude lists gave me direction, focus and helped me move away from shame and toward acceptance and action...
The author does not suggest a negative attitude and whining, ranting or complaining, just to acknowledge the negative for what it is while taking positive action against it.

That was a good article. I don't use a gratitude list as much as it's a magic moments list. I look for 3-5 positive things during the day that pleased or made me smile. It can be as simple as the smell of bacon and coffee in the morning. This act allows for me to look for moments to list. Having said that, I will continue making my magic moments list and start a ungrateful list as well to experiment.

Thanks for sharing. Sending big hugs.

Define "whining"

Define "ranting"

Are these "bad" things?

I have never found them helpful, and the point here is to try to help assure people understand the article in question is not promoting them.

I'm not saying there's no bright spots, but you need to stop trying to pretend you're not in pain.
I can't disagree.
