I have it so good, so why am I not happy? I have a stable full-time job, have enough money to pay for rent, and I go to college full-time. I always get my homework done on time, I make good grades, and I'm able to balance school and work. But why am I letting myself slip away? I keep overeating, not exercising, sleeping way too much, and I keep hurting myself. I don't care about anything that I used to anymore, and I don't have the motivation to help myself get better. Instead, I think by hurting myself, it gets my mind off of things. I want to get help and talk to a therapist and maybe get some medicine, but I can't afford that on top of everything else. I'm so tired of being depressed, but I don't have the motivation to do help myself!! I'm stuck, and I've never been this upset before. I feel like I'm just asking for attention, but it's not like that. My sister told me I'm going through a "depressed phase," and that it'll pass, but it's been over 2 weeks already. It's starting to get worse. It's starting to feel like it'll never end. I feel like I'm just rambling now and I need to get over myself. I don't know what to do.

to psych central. If you are hurting please try and find some help. There are therapist that will work an a sliding scale for those who have financial tissues. There are also support groups for people with depression that are free.

If you think you're depressed, don't listen to your sister. She's not a professional. Please don't fall into the trap of thinking that just because you "have it good" that you have no reason or excuse to depressed. It can happen to anyone..... it's an equal opportunity disorder.

Some depressions are situational like after a traumatic event. Death of a loved one, loss of a job and so on. Most are caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain's neurotransmitters and can strike anyone, anytime. It's not a phase, it's an illness just like diabetes or heart disease and there are many treatment options available if you need them.
You might consider making a doctor's appointment for a physical exam and bloodwork to rule out any underlying physical problems. Discuss your feelings honestly with your doctor and get his/her professional advice.

I believe there's a chemical imbalance that causes depression, but no one has found out what it is. Big Pharm is too busy pushing SSRIs and any new med they can come up with to make money.

Please be evaluated by a professional if it continues and worsens. If it does worsen you could stop the spiral now. Sending big hugs.

There's no need for a "reason" when we talk about depression. What matters is that you feel this way. Perhaps you can start save some money to start seeing a therapist. Maybe ask some help from your friends/relatives?
