My friend is a guy, he's in the mental hospital right now.
he* is extremely depressed. Is there anything I can do that could help my friend? Even just a little? Anything I can do to surprise my friend? We have had several conversations, I wonder what kind of gift would be a good idea? Thanks ! |

I suppose it somewhat depends on what they allow.
The reading material is a good suggestion to help relieve any tedium. I'd also just like to point out that people usually appreciate frequent short visits rather than rare long ones, which can tire everyone out. When someone is having such a difficult time, friendship and companionship is a very precious gift. And having something to look forward to in a day, even if just for a short while, means a lot. Best wishes to both of you. |

You can give him a journal. Most therapists suggest to write down everything one feels throughout the day. It helps to keep a track of my emotions.

Thank you so much for your replies guys !!!
He moved across the country some months ago so I'm currently really far away from him... otherwise I would be visiting him everyday... which he probably won't want anyway, he doesn't want to see anyone... A journal sounds like a good idea thanks but somehow he doesn't seem like a writing kind of guy to me. I did give him a small notepad when he moved away i wonder if he used it or not... Otherwise i'm also thinking about a handmade card. Since he's so far away I'm just patiently waiting for his messages otherwise then proactively messaging him,, to give him space,, am I doing it right? Is there something else I can do? |

A handmade card sounds like a wonderful idea because it's personal. You know this person best, but maybe send an occasional message along the lines of: "You don't have to respond if you don't want to -- but I wanted you to know I'm thinking of you and wish you well." Remind him that you'd be really happy to talk to him. I agree, you do sound like a thoughtful and good friend. |
