I saw my former therapist for 8 years and I still miss her. She knew everything about me. I trusted her, I felt safe with her, I loved her. I had to leave when I began a DBT program and I knew it was best for me to not go "backwards" and return to her. That was over two years ago. I am now seeing a therapist whom I like but she's not "Diane" (alias name). I ran into "Diane" last summer and told her I missed her. She said, likewise. So, I am pretty confident she misses me too. I am wondering if it's okay to write her a letter. I want her to know how I've progressed and I want her to be proud of me(which I'm sure she is). I don't care if she writes back. I just want to tell her. Does anyone have any suggestions or input?

Thanks.

I think she would be happy to hear from you, my old therapist emailed me for a while after I stopped seeing her, just friendly conversational type stuff.

I think it's ok if you write her to say how you're doing. That way, you wouldn't have this burden anymore. Be careful, though... you may tempted to write more and I don't think it would end well in that case.

I'd suggest: write the e-mail, send it, read her reply, but don't reply back (unless she specifically asks you to).

I think it depends very much on her personal beliefs etc as a therapist. Some therapists are wonderful human beings, some not so much. It sounds like your former therapist is a good therapist and person . I think she would be happy to hear from you. I agree though not to hope for too much, and I suggest not writing in much depth to her.

Thanks everyone. My current therapist also suggested to give a "synopsis" of things. I'll have to revise the letter. I don't have her email address so I'll have to snail mail it. I don't expect a reply.
