Maybe you should get tested for seasonal affective disorder...
Do you think it was out of order for my supervisor to ask me this. I do have bi polar but in my book this is as bad as joking have you taken your pills today when you do not even know if someone has a hidden condition

Sometimes I don't think we realize that we wear our well being or lack thereof on our sleeves and our faces. Even when I think I have my 'office' face on, I realize my body language is screaming that I'm in pain, or misery or both, and all I really want to do is crawl under my desk and hide. People make jokes because they have no clue how to directly address concern for a co-worker, or for a family member, for that matter, in matters of the mind or mood. I don't think it's out of order if the question came from concern for you or concern for the quality of your work. It's their job really.

It's an inappropriate question for a supervisor to ask. If They are genuinely concerned they should meet with you and recommend you see your doctor. Anything else is not acceptable. It would not be okay for me to say to my staff: you should go get tested for X mental condition. That crosses a boundary.
Thanks for this!

I think if they were concerned they would not have said it in front of all my colleagues. I have not told my work that I am on medication. I do realise that in employment law I am not supposed to hide it. Because if there was an accident at my work for example heads would roll.
I just don't try to conceal the fact that I hate my work. How am I supposed to say that if I had never got unwell I would probably be at university or in a job that suits me . I can't. Part of me believes it's still possible.

I think it’s possible they may be concerned for your well being. It’s not really possible to know for sure with this amount of information...

Agree with Fuzzybear. Without all the info how would we know? We are quite casual when concerned for a co-worker, especially if they vocalize issues, miss more than usual, etc. where I work. We are likely to recommend anything to one another...It is always out of concern, never belittling. I don't think its really possible to just say yes or no.
Thanks for this!

In front of your colleagues? I would have lost my ****. That is never Okay, whether you have a condition or not. Your supervisor should be reprimanded. That is not caring and it's certainly not appropriate.
Thanks for this!

We can agree to disagree. Not enough info to condemn anyone.
