So I'm starting therapy soon..that is as soon as I can gather the nerve to call back the therapist I'm making an appointment with. I really don't know what to expect or if there is anything I should be prepared for. I'm really nervous and scared..yet kinda of relevied I'm going. I was just wondering if anyone could tell me what to expect or had any advice on the matter.

Silver, your first visit you'll probably start by filling out some paper work designed to gather background info about you, your family, and your problems. It's helpful to know your immediate families medical history when filling this out but if you don't know something, just move on.

When you get in to see your therapist, they often start with something like, "so what brings you in to see me." It's all pretty casual and he/she will be trying to get a handle on your situation and how to help you. Just be honest with them and this part is pretty easy.

Things usually wrap up with his/her best guess as to what your deal is and their proposed treatment plan. They may also ask if you're willing to see a psychiatrist for medication.

It's usually not until subsequent visits that you really get into it so don't worry too much about this first visit.

Good luck!

Silver,

Cyran0's right the first information is usually just information gathering. They'll also usually tell you their payment policies, their rules about contact between sessions, and confidentiality.

You might want to ask some questions, if you don't already know about their background and training, and if you're going in with a specific problem that you want to deal with, how experienced they are in that area.

Good luck, I know the first couple of visits can be scary.

I started therapy not that long ago myself. I felt many of the same feelings as you are feeling. But It has been a positive thing. My first appointment was much easier than I thought it would be.

I am starting therapy as soon as tomorrow, and although I have no advice to give you, I want you to know that I share your fear. I want to be understood and I want to be helped, but by someone that I know and knows me, someone who comforts me... Not by some stranger that in the back of my mind is judging me.

You're definitely not alone.

If you have chosen a good T, he/she will guide you if you don't really know what to say. Therapists know the first visit can be difficult and usually know how to calm others fears. Like the others said, it is mainly giving the therapist general information. I have been in therapy for two and a half years. I hope it helps you as much as it has me!
