I have been on the south beach diet for about two weeks now and it seems like my depression has gotten worse. Anyone else find this when they are on a low carb diet? I do eat good carbs, but just not ALL the carbs I used to eat.

The only thing that went South on that diet was my mood. Completely into the toilet on this. I don't think this happens with everyone, but it was my experience. I have increased my vegetables and fiber and soy that I consume, but baby leave my carbs alone!! My weight is coming down slowing but now that I exercise it's helping a lot.

Good luck,

I've never tried the south beach diet (though I really need to try some diet) but my sister in law did and she became so depressed she had to go on meds. When she stopped the low carb diet circuit she could be weaned off her Lexapro.

I attribute it to that since she'd never had depression before (lucky girl) and hasn't had it since.

So much for the low carb diets for me...

Good luck!

Take care.

I haven't been on South Beach, but I did go on Atkins a few years ago. (Ironically, I am a vegetarian now) I remember after a few days of hardly any carbs, I felt the best I had felt in a loooong time. For about three days the whole world looked good and wonderful. Then it mellowed out and the depression came back. I did lose weight though.

I live in So FL so I know... do you suppose there is a connection that South Florida (where South Beach is...) has the highest number of depressed ppl vs population than any other place in the country????

And didn't some famous guy who was on the South Beach diet just need major surgery, or did he die? ooops sorry... that sure doesn't help depression!

Go see a nutritionist (like at a local hospital) they are cheap cheap cheap and plenty of help... they can determine exactly what your diet is lacking, and what YOU need for your lifestyle etc...

when we are depressed our bodies need special care (some say more chocolate too, but I wouldn't know... lol)

I've found that if you think it's your diet... it probably is.
