Is it possible for someone's depression to just be a genetic part of their makeup and/or personality traits- (like being easygoing or short-tempered)- or do you think their feelings of hopelessness and lack of joy with life have to be from something external?

i am not 100% sure but i think that if one of your parents is suffering from depression it increases the chance of you getting it however you can still get it when your in a depression free family it depends on your own personal experience and what you believe

There is a definite connection genetically. If you have that, plus an environment that engulfs you in it, then what you learn (how to respond etc) can make it more likely? But with that said, it doesn't mean that you will have to be depressed, nor that if you are that you have to be in a depressed state for your life.

This is interesting to me because I probably am engulfed in a life where I can't really get away from depression but even before these factors existed I would always go back to feeling this way- regardless of what was happening around me. I have the kind of negative situations that can't be changed so how I deal with them means everything and I guess this is the entire problem. Being good at going through the motions of trying to change my thinking but not really believing in what I'm doing inside. Feels like an act. Starting to think it is genetic.

hi musicnmoods... im sorry to hear your situation is one which seems to surround you, never letting go... i think you have a good plan in adjusting the way you view your situation.. sometimes that really isnt all that needs to be done... i hope we here more of how you are continuing to cope and rise up to an attainable level of happiness, i believe we all can find happiness, even tho it is an incredible amount of work sometimes... its taken me nearly 30 years to overcome depression and there are still days when im down... somethings in our world seem destined to always be there and their presence is somewhat depressing, but if anything good can be gained from being under the weight, it is our ability to find a light thru the darkness for ourselves and in so doing, light and guide the way for others who may follow.. we all matter... your story is one we can read and be inspired by, you can educate us how you do manage it day by day, it seems there is always another out there needing to hear our words as we struggle on, someone who is on an even darker place and just needs a hand to get out of their own deep hole... thank you for sharing and helping those in need today...

Thank you for all you said. I'm so used to communicating on these forums mainly through lyrics, that I almost forgot I was actually talking and asking a question! I will try to do it more often, tho, the feedback is really helpful
