I have a designated payee because the one who gave me a favorable decision regarding SSDI believed that I would need someone to manage my finances. Therefore, my money goes into someone else's account. I need to get another payee or demonstrate to the SSA that I can manage my financial affairs. I know I can manage my finances. However, I read on the SSA website that showing enough improvement that I don't need such a payee may trigger a review. I don't want to risk losing my SSDI benefits but I miss being able to decide where my money goes.

Shadow Wraith,

I hear you loud and clear! Over two years ago, I attempted suicide and because I get both SSI and SSDI, my doctor declared my incompetent to manage my own finances. My Mom was declared my payee. To try and change this would be a real pain because I have to get another doctor to say that I am competent to manage my own finances - UGH! Way too much work at this point!

I understand your fear of triggering a review. I am sorry to hear you are having problems with your current payee.

I am thinking it is not necessarily the same process to designate a different payee as it is to show competence to manage your own funds. Please inquire about this as it may just be a change in payee, not needing a review necessarily for a different designee of your funds.

Good luck!!!!

I'm not real knowledgeable in these areas.... but if your neuropathy is enough for the SSDI, along with some of the anxiety etc., then improving enough to manage your money shouldn't ruin your entire claim. I mean, you want to get better don't you? Are you better? Talk to the doctor!

I was under the impression that you have to be reviewed annually anyway...is this not occurring?

IDK but if this is a trend or not, with those receiving SSDI, truly, but my tidbit of paranoia would say it's a government idea to track the money of those receiving benefits.

But if there's an annual review anyway, perhaps you could put that as a goal to improve enough to get back that control, it can be beneficial to your mental health too, imo.

when i was on ssdi some time ago i had no problems like others said with getting booted out due to my receiving my check directly. i'd speak with your caseworker re getting the check directly. sounds like when you had the initial decision it was based on how u were than. don't know how long u've received benefits. but a review of this decision may help you.
