Was talking to a "close" IRL friend, and we/I (we referrring to the friend) decided that I am "non functioning" in many areas
(sorry to calista, the timing of your post was a complete coincidence)
It would be nice to get free therapy as I am so non functional but that seems unlikely, just more (wrong) labels if I ask.

I'm angry and disappointed and pretty much sick of everything

So you and a ?friend? decided you were non-functioning in many areas?

Well....you are extremely hard on yourself...so I don't know if you should necessarily be the one to make that judgement of being "non-functioning"....and, if this was a real, true friend then they would be more accepting of your weaknesses and be helping to accentuate your strengths!! So maybe they are not the best ones to be assisting you in this area. And besides, who are they to judge anyway?

Fuzzy.....let's look at how WELL you function!!

~ You are able to come to a community...online....and reach out for support!! (That's a very important part of self care)

~ You are able to provide for yourself physically and keep a roof over your head....allbeit that may be difficult at times, you have been successful.

~ You are able to provide your body with the nutrients it needs to thrive. If you weren't....your body would not function.

~ You are able to see the glimmer of hope that exists...if ever so faint....in many situations, even when the darkness is screaming in your ear!!

I'd say that this is some strong positive evidence that you ARE functioning....therefore disproving the argument that you are "non-functioning"!!

So there!!

What was the point of the discussion? If you are "non-functional" in some areas, did you come up with a way to improve your functioning in those areas? You have a choice of how you deal with any information you receive. You can decide if it is valid, or unfounded. What do you think? Is it useful information that can help you to be a better person or enjoy life more, etc.? If it isn't information you can use, then can you discard it?

I'm "non-funcitonal" sometimes and at some things. Other times I do better, and there are things that I can do well. What are some of the things you are good at? I do know some of them, but I'd like to know what you give yourself credit for being good at.

I think that Rap said some really good stuff here.
Have another question tooo---what exactly does she mean by "non-functional"???? Good grief, I have days where I am "non-functional"--don't do anything at all--sleep or veg or stare at a wall. So?? I need those days sometimes. Other days I accomplish much.

But that is very surface "non-functional"...or functional....

You are intelligent, you are insightful, you read, you learn, you are open and inviting to new ideas---you have a brain that works, you can see, hear, feel, smell, taste. You have an imagination. Those are FUNCTIONAL qualities.

I worked as a volunteer for a brief time in a residential home for severely disabled children. There was a little boy there that I was told had only enough brain to keep him breathing on his own. He had a shunt to keep fluid from building up. One day I was passing by his bed and smiled at him and said "hi" and he smiled back. Everyone thought he was "non functional"---but he smiled. he recognized my smile and returned it. he could follow me with his eyes. don't really know the point I'm making except maybe "non functional" really means you're physically dead.....

FUZZYBEAR I just hate to disappoint you but I am the most non-functioning person around here. it was not until I came here that I was able to find myself again. I have come to realise in the past couple of days what is non-funtion to one person is high funtional to some one else. you need to go with what you are comfortalble with as long as you don't hurt yourself or someone else.

Thanks so much everyone for your support and insight, you've all helped!
(this friend isn't mean, I think it was me who thought of the word (I'm not disappointed at all if I'm not "non functional") They don't tend to label me but don't disagree with me much either.. they aren't "psychologically minded" )
(actually a dr used a similar but more insulting word about me which was what brought the discussion about, and to me, hearing that from a dr who offers no real help... is "hurtful" to say the least )
I'm sure I'll wish I'd deleted this reply, its off topic and irrelevant, my apologies

I hope you won't delete this fuzzy. I also think it's relevant to your other posts (and even if it weren't, you're allowed to change topic- it's your thread ).

I'm sorry you are struggling right now. Sometimes Drs don't understand. Even though they've had training in a lot of things, they might not have much knowledge in others.

Hang in there Fuzzy.

I do not think anyone should discuss our lives and limitations UNLESS they are WILLING to chip in and HELP change things and encourage us.

I sometimes think that you and I both are very harsh and demanding towards ourselves - it's kind of like doing a bully's job for him and beating my own self up. OUCH, I would like to become more gentle to myself. It is possible to be realistic and yet still kind.

Hugs and Hope for better times and friends ahead.

some drs and psyches and T's dont deserve the titles they have - you prove them wrong by being the kind caring person you are - we are all good in some areas and not so good in others - thats why we are humans or bears lol and not machines and even machines break down and need repair occassionally.

dont beat yourself up over other people and their lack of understanding

we care and we are here for you
