I have been trying to figure out why I have a mute alter, and now feel that this mute alter has alters of their own. Is that possible? When the mute alter has been out, there is not one voice I hear, it is like 4. so i am wondering if this is due to the mute alter having their own alters. I cant wait to process this with T.
Thanks for this!

T is the way to go. For me, I have an alter who is only 5 and does not say much at all. But just found out that is because he was formed when I woke up during surgery while getting tonsils removed at that age.

As to alters having alters, my T said yes. And I have one who is 15 who does have 2 alters at the least. It is odd but they are inside her because she was a first type of protector before we got our adult protector alter inside. And the 15 yr old basically hid the "twins" - 11 yrs old one male and one female - inside of her to protect us.

Odd stuff what the mind does to protect the self!

Wow! you are not kidding. I am a new member of this site and it is great to hear so many people talk about there experiences with their alters.

I have 18 alters in all and really don't know if any of them have an alter. My alters that range in ages 19 yrs. to 2yrs call me mom. Do any of yours call you mom?
Thanks for this!

Yes, alters can definitely have alters of their own, but it really isn't any more complicated than any other dissociative split. In a way its just an elaborate system of task delegation. (For example... I [host] can't handle a task and delegates x to do it... but x can't handle all of that alone so delegates part of the task to x1 and x2). Once the orginal ability to delegate tasks (split) is there, dissociating can occur in all manner of directions.

Mine do not call me mom. They don't really call me anything. We are more like friends. I am very blessed because my mind never really saw them as separate from me because that was not logical. (( Ok - I am strange - my first words were actually "Light Hot" - rather than the normal baby stuff ;-) )) So go figure. Anyway, I think the closer in communication one is with their internal parts, the easier it is to know the truth that one is whole but to accept the gift our mind gave us by allowing dissociative process to occur when we were in danger.

Just2be,

We are all different and you have within you whomever you have and call them whatever you do for your own reasons. There is room for however your system has worked for you.

For us, I say yes, to alters having alters, although I would not have called them that at the time.

No, to calling anyone Mom (or Dad for that matter).

We do have Mom and Dad alters we were able to 'put over there' for a time till we could sort out the wanted behaviours from the unwanted behaviours of the Mom and Dad though. Took much work and a very long time though.

I'm not sure if an alter can have an alter. I have a few mute alters (amongst others) They were never given a voice. Maybe they happened b4 I could talk. Or maybe they are too afraid to talk.

Have to wait and see.... or not as the case maybe.

YES - and they are called fragments... they can be fallen parts of you or fallen part of an alter, that which has broken away or fallen into little pieces.
Thanks for this!

Rhapsody - very interesting! Thank you! I was wondering why the twins my alter Mick has told me that one of them had no hands and the other had no feet. I think it is because that Mick part of me felt like there were situations where she could only run but not take action... then there were other situations where she could act but not run. Kinda like fight or flight very much fragmented internally. What you said helps me out! Thank you!

I have learned so much by reading all the replies here, and now hope that I can get my mute to communicate. When in my t's office I can here a lot come from that Mute part, but here at home I cant seem to communicate with it. I have tried writing out questions, asking inside, and drawing pictures but still nothing. if your mute alter communicates, how do you do it? I wonder why mine only comes out in my t's office? Any suggestions?
Thanks for this!

You are Welcome.... I was lucky to have found an awesome Specialist in DID when I had my breakdown twelve years ago and and then an Outpatient Facility that dealt with nothing but DID when I got out the hospital.

Thanks for this!

I don't think I would have phrased it that way -an alter having alters- but it does seem to work for some, doesn't it?

Not only can you have fragmentations, but there's also a possibility that alters formed around the same time in your life, or even at different times for the same "purpose" or type of event, that they might be clustered closer together and share information only within that structure.

It's all ok though, it's all you.
