Hi (((((everyone)))))
Just a note to say we don't know when we'll be back on line Medical Hospitalization
On 28th April we fell down a 4 foot slope & broke the calcaneus bone in our heel, we've been in hospital until last night, when we signed out against medical advice.
Tomorrow we have to try to find a better public hospital, but we aren't very hopeful. To go private would cost between $20,000 & $30,000 AUD, we don't have it.
If we can't find a way to get it pinned & plated we will be crippled forever. The hospital we were in seemed quite happy to let this happen, & we were in agony & all they gave us was Panadol , & we hadn't slept for 4 nights or eaten. They gave us other ppls meds twice, once a shot, they wouldn't say what. We had to leave because we were afraid they'd kill us by incompetence.

When I broke my foot I was put into a "boot cast" which kept my foot placed at the right position to keep it immobile. It took seven months to heal without being pinned and plated but it healed correctly. My broken areas were the heal, achilies heal cord and the 4th and 5th metatarsal bones. If you cant find the means to have it pinned and plated have them put on a plaster or fiberglass type cast for the first four weeks then switch you to a "boot cast" and use a bone growth stimulator 15 minutes - a half hour a day and your bones will heal correctly and be fully functional again.

Take care.

There are 4 ways of treating shattering of the calcaneus bone.
1) so called "functional treatment, not suitable unless the break is simple, mine isn't, it's in 5 pieces.
2) fusion of the ankle, causing talar arthritis & a permament disability
3) reconstruction, using screws & plates. This might work, but it's the NHS's decision whether to offer it or not.
4) bone grafts. There is no hope of me getting this as a public patient. It seems from the research that this would probably work best.

All these treatments are notorious for their failure rate, as the calcaneus bone does not have a very good blood supply. Medical Hospitalization Medical Hospitalization Medical Hospitalization Medical Hospitalization Medical Hospitalization Medical Hospitalization

Anyway, we go back to the nasty surgeon on May 10th, & if he orders the surgery we will be gone for at least 3 weeks.

We can't imagine how we can spend 3 weeks in hospital without dissing out, it's too long. We were having trouble after 3 or 4 days. Medical Hospitalization Medical Hospitalization Medical Hospitalization Medical Hospitalization

Oh Owwww, sheesh, the state of health care is sooo yuk. The hint I have to throw into the pot is to eat "hot" foods/spices to help your blood keep moving and getting into those sluggish dense spots.
Chiles, ginger, curries....... and massage gently as close as you can and the rest of your foot.... and do some kind of movement to get your heart rate up for a bit, get oxygen to the ol' extremities. Best luck finding help and the right hospital.

Sorry they don't have the same treatment options there that they have here. ((((((((((Zorah))))))))) hang in there. I know being laid up is so hard. In fact I could not handle that. Good thing Im DID. I was able to float off the pain and so on by going into my tunnel area and mentat safe place and take care of everything including walking on the broken foot to get from where I had fallen to the DHS building where I had a visit with my son. The DHS intake caseworker did not know I was DID so my being able to walk on a broken foot and have a completely normal visitation with my child without any signs of experiencing and ment or physical pain and effects of having a broke foot scared her the next day when I showed up in a metal boot cast to keep my foot in the right position. Now even if her clients have just a scratch she sends them off to a doctor as a precaution. being DID has its advantages. LOL I would not have made it through the seven months it took to heal those bones if it wasn't for my mental safe place.

Lots of hugs and warm thoughts going your way.

Take care.

I've heard from Zorah's bf, who says that Zorah fell over on her crutches and broke her wrist, and she's now in hospital. She's going to have an operation in the morning (her time) and then an operation to mend the broken calcaneous bone in her foot.

He doesn't know how long she will be in hospital for, but he says days or even weeks, and Zorah has estimated before that she might be in hospital for three weeks or more.
