I have had depersonailzation since I was about 12 years old and it comes and goes over the years. I am trying to find out how I got this. Is it hereditary or does something cause this from childhood? I wasn't abused or anything. my parents got divorced when i was really young and that was depressing to me, i would cry alot. also i noticed when something really horrible happens I get my DP back. I am on anti depressant. any help would be appreciated. thanks

Im so sorry but we are not able to tell you how/why you have depersonalization problems. only you and your treatment providers can say whether its inherited in your family or whether its from abuse, or any other physical/mental or otherwise problem/event in your life..

with in me no its not inherited. my depersonalization comes from many things....sleep problems, stress, dehydration, MS, and many other events/issues in my life.

to find out what has caused your depersonalization you will need to contact your own treatment providers.

Yes, if you want to know the real reason going to a professional is your best option.

but we also want to let you know that those having DID are not all child abuse survivors.

It only has to be an event that a child's mind can not handle.

Even those with full blown DID are triggered more under stress.

It may help you to sit down and write down the events that are happening when you are doing this. by recording the events you just may be able to figure out what is causing this reaction and allow your self a way to learn coping skills.

good luck!

I agree with the two others that have replied to your query.
Like you, my parents divorced when I was young and as happy as I was to be away from the abuse, it was still traumatic. I also notice that my DPD gets worse when something bad happens.
My DPD is almost definitely the result of a physically, emotionally and verbally abusive father - much of which I have blocked out. I can remember the abusive actions, but cannot remember how I dealt with them, or if I even did deal with them. DPD has many faces and many causes. Only a professional can help you establish the cause.
In my case, the disorder is very well managed with the appropriate meds. I no longer see a therapist - I have learned to recognize when I'm about to have a full-blown depersonalization/derealization episode and medicate as necessary. For me, it never truly goes away, but it does subside and I'm able to function in society with minimal symptoms. I have noticed a timing for the peaks - typically mid autumn and mid spring.
I recommend that you do see a mental health professional - I couldn't have come this far without the assistance of my psychiatrist and the therapists I've seen over the years.
Thanks for this!
