Well, im kind of weird anyways and i like it that way Is this a dissociative symptom or am I just weird

Sometimes, when im listening to people talk, It feels like I hear the sounds but my head cant make any sense out of it. It literally sounds like they are speaking another language or that their speech is garbled up.

Ive noticed that these times I tend to feel sort of mildly dissociated (frozen in place, slight floaty feeling and feeling like im behind my eyes)

Anyone ever get this?

Sounds like it could be Depersonalization and/or Derealization. I dunno for sure though. Is this a dissociative symptom or am I just weird

Derealization is the feeling that nothing is real (kinda like being in a dream) while depersonalization is the feeling that one is detached from their body or world. (kinda like being a ghost)

Yep, I've often looked at people and said, "your mouth is moving, but you're not saying anything at all." People didn't no know to think of me. I look back and realize that, at those times, I was very far away and removed. By the time the words were reaching my mind from that great a distance, it felt like I was only catching 1 out of every 4 or 5 words, or it was all garbled.

I still do that regularly. I have to concentrate hard to hear people talk when I'm feeling detatched or floaty.

Thanks everyone. Ive always had this, and originally i thought there might be something wrong with my ears or hearing. But, after having it tested to heck and back, there really is no physical reason for it. Im going to mention it to my Pdoc I just started seeing a few months ago just to see what she says but what you guys have described sounds like it.

What happens to me a lot is the feeling of watching myself. Like sometimes when I'm driving I feel like I am sitting in the back seat watching myself drive. Is this a dissociative symptom or am I just weird

Or that I'm "standing" in the background but my body is front and forward. Is this a dissociative symptom or am I just weird

Exactly, petunia. I sit really far back at this times...like I'm the one recording the movie of what I'm watching.

When I'm like that, the memory is like that as well...like I'm watching a movie with little or no emotion, but more a commentary.

I know what you are talking about. Sometimes it is like the Charlie Brown cartoons where the teacher sounded like "WAH WAH WAAAA WAH WHA"

Yup. Another thing that happens a lot is distorted body parts. Like I will look at my hands and one is noticeably larger than the other. I remember arguing with my p-doc once because I "saw" that my left ankle was swollen and she couldn't see any difference. What? It was huge! I was astounded that she could not see it!

I asked the receptionist when I left if my ankle looked swollen to her, she said no. I got home...hubby said no.

I've never done that, but many times have literally watched my hands doing something like they had their own will and i'm sitting back thinking, "those are MY hands?" knowing they don't look familiar...

I haven't noticed distorted body parts here but sometimes I sit at my keyboard and watch my fingers type what my brain is thinking at the same time wondering why those things were typing what I was thinking.

I do have problems with people talking and not understanding. That happens to me a lot as well. ... and I just lost what I was thinking about saying... lol... so I guess I will add more later if I can. Silly brain. wow, Ive experienced the warped body parts too.

And I have had the same experience, where I feel as if something is swollen. Its really freaked me out a couple of times.

Now though, I think i have a start on what it may be!

Yes to all of the above.

I have depersonalization disorder and I do those things since I was young such as looking at my hands and not feeling like they are mine or they look much smaller etc.

I also here the Peanuts talk "wah wah wah wah wah" or I just don't comprehend or know what they've just said.

I also when I think certain thoughts will bring much more stronger feelings of altered reality. What reality I have left it feels like. But to the point that my body will feel like it's being pulled to the floor by my mouth etc.

Many different things.

A really good site on this and dissociative disorders is

http://www.strangerinthemirror.com/

this was extremely to me in helping me understand my situation.

It might not be so much as the complete depersonalization etc...but perhaps you are in the process of switching and thus no one part of you is receiving the complete information. (Even if you don't end up switching...the audible might be being heard by another part of you?) Just a thought. Let me know what you think.

Hi Rainbowzz,

Yep. I call it the Charlie Brown's teacher syndrome. You know, in the Peanuts movies when any adult or teacher is speaking, all you hear is "Waa wa-waa waa waa".

I describe it too as feeling like I am a million miles away from the other person, even if they are standing right there beside me. And sometimes I can tell they are aware that something is going on because I will see them looking at me as if they wonder if I am hearing or comprehending what they are saying. It's hard to comprehend "Waa wa-waa waa waa".

yeah, i get the 'wah wah wah' thing going on too!

i find it happens the worst when i'm upset about something. like if someone has made promises and then broken them if i'm upset and they start making promises...

their words literally don't mean anything.

i can't understand them.

self protective strategy i guess.

Sounds like my life... I have so much noise in my head all the time, I have learned how to sort them out.... but when speaking to others at times it is like I have moved to the land of the unknown, language is different and I can't find any landmarks.... that is so scary....
