I know that impulsive behaviors like binging, sex, spending, etc. are one symptom of either bipolar or borderline.
Is there anything else that these kind of behaviors are a symptom of? Besides just poor judgement? Especially when they all seem to happen at the same time. Just curious. Thanks. |

It doesn't all have to fit neatly into one disorder. In fact, it is rare that it will. I would worry so much about what these are symptoms of; rather, I would be concerned at the fact that you are doing these self-destructive behaviors and you want to find ways to treat them. A symptom doesn't come from a disorder-- it comes from an underlying reason-- the disorder is just the name.

I think everyone has impulsiveness to all those things and more .But what it comes down to is with bipolar we are like a junkie getting are fix.I love to foods shop not because I need food in the house but I need to buy something new everyday to get my fix. At least with food somebody will eat it so its not a waste .I'm not proud to say that I even shoplift anything weather I need it or not its just a rush i even go back later and but it back sometimes.

I guess you're right, pink. Doesn't really matter as long as I try to stop it.
I'm just starting to realize that I really don't fit the bill for anything, other than just recurring depression and occasional mood swings. But I really don't think I'm Bipolar at all, not even Bipolar II. It just doesn't fit. And the more I read about Borderline....I just don't know. It's possible, but not totally "me". But that leaves me wondering if the self-destructive behavior is just me making bad decisions and being a bad person and it has nothing to do with impulse control.... Kind of a hard realization I guess. No matter what, the illness doesn't "excuse" anything I did, but maybe explains it...but if it's not that, then the only explanation is that I just did some really bad stuff. |

Impulsive behaviour can also be a sign or Asperger's Syndrome or high-end autism. The person can have impulsive behaviour, communications challenges in reading people's emotions and expressions, tics, and high verbal skills (very talkative)

I agree with everything pink said. What label you stick on yourself matters less than understanding the consequences of your impulsivity and having some viable alternative to the undesirable behaviors.
Good luck.

Substance/drug use is another explanation for impulsive behavior. I would include both legal and illegal substances in that, as well as prescribed medications that are having unwanted effects.
