I want to get help and improve my situation concerning my dissociative identity disorder, but I am nervous about visiting a therapist. Any opinions? Anything is welcome, thanks in advance!

Oh so me too hun. Being older in life with a semi-death wish, I can't see the point of even trying. Actually, being on here daily makes me focus on the situation which makes me conscience of the obvious which makes me feel "off". On going ignorance is bliss.

So seeing a therapist is scary in raising all the worst feelings that has been suppressed then just signing off here and "forgetting" what's going on.

I'm always changing, so dealing with life as a singular I just can't see it possible. I'm better off co-operating then rehashing old traumatic life events.

I hope you get good advise, aside from my thoughts giving.

I never knew, lived a good while, and managed some sense of sanity. Good luck!

i think it would all depend on the therapist, your relationship with them, what type of therapy they do, etc. and of course the trust you build with them.

there are always pros and cons though.

it could take a while to find one you click with, so that is a con.

pros are you could find a really good one who can help kind of help you sort through what you are wanting to sort through.

i see a psychiatrist who does therapy as well, but when i saw her too much in the past it seemed to kind of keep me in that mindset where things came up more for me..it wasn't because i was going over trauma or anything though...i guess at that time for me, i was experiencing a high degree of symptoms almost daily, so if that is something you are experiencing, it could be a pro so you can be monitored a bit more if you need it.

so, it really comes down to what you feel you need from a therapist and what you feel you need to work on and finding one that works well.

Pros: You can feel less alone with your struggles, you can understand yourself better, you can work to solve things that are keeping you stuck. For me the biggest pro is that I feel seen and accepted by another human being. It was new to me and I feel like a different, better person because of it.

Cons: You have to take the risk of starting a new, honest relationship with another human. You might not be a good fit with the therapist, which means taking the risk to try another one. You might dredge up things that are painful (but aren't they hurting you anyway?).

I struggled on my own for a long time. I tried a couple of Ts in college and it was a greater risk than I was ready to take at the time. I do think that therapy is worth trying, more than once, if you are struggling.
