Hey guys, Im in a really desperate situation right now and might hospitalize myself very soon. I have experienced this before but not quite to this degree. I keep having a very disturbing sleep issue where it literally feels like it is impossible for me to sleep. No I dont mean regular insomnia, I mean it feels like I literally am incapable of sleeping, as if my brain is being "blocked" from producing it or something. I am diagnosed with a dissociative disorder but im beginning to question that diagnosis as I have researched what Im feeling and came across brain encephalitis and many other similar serious things that need attention immediately, which is why im considering going to the ER. Before I consider going to the hospital, has anyone else experienced this with psychosis or dissociation? Or does anyone know what this is?
Thanks for this!

Hey there. I am up there with dissociation, not psychosis. Sometimes I get that, in that I want to sleep, but I just can't do it. It really is like my brain has forgotten how to go to sleep. I do still manage to get about three hours sleep a night (or day) though. This can last several weeks, and is usually followed by a period when I need to sleep 12 hours a day!

Hey there. I can't say I have experienced anything like that with my own dissociation.

However I do think that if you are correct in saying that you *literally* cannot sleep (meaning that you have not actually fallen asleep at all for a period of time longer than 48 hours)

and

this inability to sleep persists despite your best efforts

then I think you should seek medical advice as soon as possible. Sleep deprivation is a very serious issue and can seriously impair your ability to function as well as potentially causing hallucinations and other serious symptoms.

If you haven't slept at all for more than 24 hours you should never get behind the wheel of a car ... studies have shown that although you are not legally impaired you are as functionally impaired as a drunk driver.

I think you should definitely seek medical advise, especially if - as you say - you are not able to get any sleep at all.

I did have some bouts with this a couple years back where I didn't sleep anywhere from 1-3 days at a time... I did end up going to the ER /hospital and they changed my meds. Now I sleep fine so if you need you feel like you have to go then by all means go.
Googling your symptoms is probably the worst thing you can do , although it can be informative on some level they will also list everything from a tiny broken toenail to a tumor and it doesn't mean you have any of that , I use to google every symptom and learned my lesson because I was causing myself much unneeded anxiety Going to the Dr. helped me get my peace of mind .

There are lots of great people on here to listen to you and talk . Good luck to you and I hope you feel better soon

sleep issues in my location do not include dissociation. short version sleep issues where the brain is blocking what is needed to sleep is a medical problem here in my location.... the brain naturally produces chemicals, some get produced nightly, some are meant to decrease during the night. this can be detected with medical procedures like blood tests, sleep disorder tests, cat scans, MRI and other tests.

dissociation is things like feeling numb, spaced out, disconnected due to a trigger...

examples...

being stressed out at work makes me feel numb, spaced out, like I can not feel my body.

being anxious causes me these same symptoms.

brain encephalitis shows up in medical tests like blood tests (because this medical problem causes other medical issues too that can be detected in blood work) and its also diagnosed through brain scans like x rays, cat scans, and MRI MRA...

my suggestion since you are looking at medical rather than mental answers contact your medical doctor who can get you set up for diagnostics for medical problems.

Yeah, me myself couldn't see how dissociation would keep you up, but what do I know. The body gets tired and runned down, but I know mania can give one a drive that won't stop. That's about it.
