As a parent I am posting to this group of those going through or headed or completed a divorce.
My son is headed for divorce. They are separated. What was the most helpful thing your parents did or the thing you wished they hadn't when you were going through this? My son is 28. And going into depression, crying. Thank you |

The worst thing that my Mother did when I seperated with my partner was to tell me that she thought he was weird and never liked him - she actually meant it. Another thing was to tell me that I'm stronger than that and to stop crying and get on with life....Telling me that I didn't need anti-depressants was wrong too - I had to do what was right for me. She wasn't trying to be harsh but it came out that way. The best thing that she did was just be there for me, hold me when I cried and try to be supportive.

Just because they are separated, all is not lost. I have seen God restore many marriages. I would be supportive of him, dont tell him to leave her, let that be his decision and be an ear when he needs to talk. He is going to grieve this marriage just like one would a death.
If they have kids and there are no glaring issues such as drug abuse or infidelity, maybe you can encourage him to seek marital therapy. I think its a shame that people just throw away marriages without exhausting all efforts to try to save them. I am not speaking about your sons situation, but just in general. Good luck. |
